BOYS PREP SOCCER
Montesano 5, Forks 1
Montesano scored three goals in the first 20 minutes of the game en route to a 5-1 win over Forks on Wednesday at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.
Midfielder Cris Tobar converted a Bulldogs penalty kick to open the scoring just 10 minutes into the match then assisted on a goal by sophomore forward Brady Whipple for a 2-0 lead in the 13th minute.
Monte’s early scoring blitz culminated when senior forward Felix Romero scored in the 19th minute.
Up 3-1 at halftime, Romero scored his second of the game off an assist from Tobar in the 53rd minute.
Whipple followed with his second goal of the match, with Romero getting the assist, for a 5-1 lead in the 56th minute.
Bulldogs goalkeeper Matt Causey made six saves in the second half to help secure league-leading Montesano’s victory.
With the win, Montesano remained undefeated on the season, with all five wins coming against 1A Evergreen League opponents.
The Bulldogs host Chief Leschi in a 1A Evergreen League matchup set for 6 p.m. on Friday.

GIRLS PREP GOLF
Montesano 202, Hoquiam 231
Montesano defeated Hoquiam 202-231 on Tuesday at Highland Golf Course in Cosmopolis.
Monte was led by Lucy Scott – who won Medalist of the Match honors – and Maggie Kupka, each with sub-50 scores of 45 and 49, respectively, on the rain-soaked course.
Hoquiam’s top-four golfers were led by Molly Gundersen, who shot a 51 for her 9-hole round.
Both teams will be back in action on Thursday, with Hoquiam facing Elma at Oaksridge Golf Course in Elma while Monte takes on Rochester at the Riverside Golf Course in Chehalis.
Both matches are scheduled to tee off at 3:30 p.m.

Elma 226, Rochester 271
Elma opened its season with a 226-271 win over Rochester on Tuesday at Oaksridge Golf Course in Elma.
The Eagles were led by Medalist of the Match Olivia Moore, who was the only golfer in the meet to card a sub-40 score with a 39 over nine holes of play.
Elma’s Sophia Hamilton shot below 50 with a 45.
“It was a sunny day, with a lot of beautiful shots out there today,” Elma head coach Alexis Keating said. “I am so excited for our season to be officially underway.”
Elma hosts Hoquiam at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at Oaksridge Golf Course.

GIRLS PREP TENNIS
Columbia-White Salmon 6, Hoquiam 0
Hoquiam lost 6-0 to Columbia-White Salmon on Tuesday at Columbia High School.
Despite the loss, Grizzlies head coach Jennifer Pace said she is seeing improvement in her program in its second year back after a long hiatus.
“Our team continues to make great strides in our second year of high school tennis,” she said. “Ashlynn Amsbury and Megan Gilbert each won three games in both sets of their singles matches, showing resilience on the court. Juliana Philamalee and Arainuh Lopez fought hard in doubles, taking the first set to a tiebreak before falling 2-6 in the second. A highlight of the day came from our junior varsity doubles team of Maya Sudderth and Ilenia Zapata, which secured a strong 8-4 victory. I’m so proud of our team’s progress and excited to see where our continued improvement takes us.”
Hoquiam faces Castle Rock at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday at Castle Rock High School.

Elma head wrestling coach Jeff Catterlin was named the 1A-class Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the Mat Classic XXXVI State Tournament on Feb. 22 at the Tacoma Dome.
