Hoquiam beat Aberdeen in a Myrtle Street Rivalry matchup as we review Twin Harbors prep volleyball games from Thursday.

Hoquiam 3, Aberdeen 0

Hoquiam made the plays down the stretch of each game to beat Aberdeen 3-0 on Thursday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

The Grizzlies (3-1) defeated the Bobcats (1-2) 25-20, 25-20 and 25-21 by outpacing Aberdeen late in each of the three games.

Hoquiam held a 22-15 lead in Game 1 before Aberdeen rallied to cut the lead to 23-20 after a Grizzlies net touch.

But Aberdeen’s momentum was halted with a net touch of their own and Grizzlies outside hitter RanaeJah Burtenshaw closed out the set with a kill.

In Game 2, Hoquiam held an early 11-4 lead before Aberdeen rallied to cut the deficit to 11-8 on a kill by senior middle hitter Lilly Camp.

Aberdeen got as close as 24-20 but ran out of time as an illegal touch on a set gave Hoquiam second-set victory.

In the third set, Hoquiam started to pull away at 21-15, forcing an Aberdeen timeout.

The Bobcats rallied to 21-21 after a kill by Camp.

Aberdeen then took a 23-21 lead on an ace by Liberty Schimelpfenig and were poised to take its first set win of the match.

But Schimelpfenig’s next serve sailed long, giving Hoquiam an opportunity to tie the match, which they did when an Aberdeen shot over the net went out of bounds.

Then some miscommunication on the Aberdeen side allowed a receive to drop in between three Cats, putting Hoquiam at match point.

But Hoquiam couldn’t close out the set, as Lexi LaBounty’s serve went wide, tying the match at 24-24.

On the next play, an Aberdeen reception went into the net, giving the Grizzlies a second shot at match point.

Once again, Hoquiam failed to convert as a kill by Aberdeen outside hitter Hadley Lowery tied the match at 25-25.

An unforced error on an Aberdeen set allowed the ball to drop to the floor, putting Hoquiam at match point for the third time.

The Grizzlies closed out the game when Camp hit a kill shot long, giving Hoquiam a coveted Myrtle Street Rivalry win.

“We went out and told them to be relentless and that every point matters, to never give up on a ball,” Hoquiam head coach said of her team, which had less height than Aberdeen. “They have taken that to heart and were going for absolutely everything.”

“I just wanted to win so bad,” Hoquiam setter and team captain Katlyn Brodhead said. “It was really hard. (Aberdeen) is a good team.”

Brodhead added the Grizzlies were able to feed off the energy of the crowd late in sets, which helped lead to the victory.

“I think they did really good keeping our energy up the whole time,” she said. “I think we were really scrappy. Our energy was up and our passes were amazing.”

Aberdeen head coach Desiree Glanz said the problems started before the first point due to a rotation mix-up that caused a long delay early in the first game.

“I started us off not on the right foot,” Glanz said. “So we were a little bit confused the first game. I take complete blame.”

Glanz added the energy level, or lack thereof, was also a contributing factor.

“We had no fight,” she said. “We’ve been really working on positivity with each other and trying to find that killer instinct and we haven’t quite found it yet.”

Aberdeen takes on Rochester at 7 p.m. Monday at Sam Benn Gym.

Hoquiam will play at Ilwaco at 7 p.m. on Monday.

Napavine 3, Raymond-South Bend 0

Raymond-South Bend lost in straight sets to Napavine 25-17, 25-18 and 25-21 on Thursday in South Bend.

The Ravens (1-3) were led by Ava Baugher (10 blocks, 8 kills), Sierra Stepp (2 aces), Kassie Koski (2 aces) and Fatima Delgado, who head coach Julie Jewell said “passed well on defense and serve-receive.”

“We had runs of points, but we just couldn’t keep momentum going,” Jewell added. “Our communication was poor, which led to too many dropped balls.”

RSB takes on Montesano at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Raymond High School.
