Chelan 85, Hoquiam 48

Turnovers proved to be a deciding factor in Hoquiam’s 85-48 loss to Chelan in the Native American Classic on Saturday at Wenatchee Valley College.

The Grizzlies (1-2 overall) trailed the Mountain Goats (2-0) 41-31 at the half but saw the game get away in the third quarter. Chelan outscored Hoquiam 29-5 in the frame thanks in large part to approximately 12 Grizzlies turnovers.

“They came out as the second half started and shut us down,” Grizzlies head coach Jeff Niemi said.

Hoquiam was led by sophomore guard Lincoln Niemi, who had 25 points – 21 in the first half – and nine rebounds in the loss.

Ryker Maxfield added nine points while Ethan Byron added eight rebounds Hoquiam.

Freshman forward Talan Abbott “played with some really good confidence” coming off the bench for the Grizzlies, according to Coach Niemi. Abbott had three rebounds, an assist and a steal in the game.

Hoquiam shot 41.5% from the field on 17-of-41 shooting and continued to show improvement in the rebounding department with 30 boards to 33 for the Mountain Goats.

But the key stat of the game was the turnover ratio as Hoquiam had 31 compared to seven for Chelan, which used a variety of defenses to befuddle the Grizzlies.

“That’s plus-24 (turnovers) and that’s bad,” said Coach Niemi, who noted Chelan switched from diamond-and-1, man and zone defenses effortlessly. “They really did a good job switching defenses. … When we seemed to get comfortable with one of their looks, they switched the look up, which was what good, smart teams do.”

Coach Niemi said the weekend tournament helped his team gain valuable experience three games into the season.

“The one thing you can’t do in practice is simulate the kinds of teams we’re playing here,” he said. “A positive would be we’re getting live reps versus really good teams.”

Hoquiam has a non-league matchup at Shelton at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Willapa Valley 54, Wahkiakum 51

Home cookin’ served Willapa Valley well as the Vikings picked up their first win of the season 54-51 over Wahkiakum on Saturday in Menlo.

Valley (1-2) trailed the Mules (2-1) 40-37 heading into the fourth quarter of the non-conference matchup and outscored Wahkiakum by six in the final period.

“This was a great win for us in front of our home crowd,” Valley head coach Derek Rask said. “Earlier this week, we had two really close games that we couldn’t close out. Tonight, we were able to close this one out by playing solid on the defensive end, and we did a nice job of taking care of the ball, especially in the second half. I thought we were composed in the fourth quarter and our decision-making was excellent down the stretch.”

Valley was led by junior center J.B. Russell, who scored 15 points and had seven rebounds.

Senior guard Nathan Fluke and junior guard Blane King scored 10 points apiece for Valley, with King adding seven boards to his stat line.

The Vikings host North Beach at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Aberdeen 51, Rochester 15

Aberdeen picked up its first win of the season with a 51-15 win over Rochester on Saturday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (1-1) used their defensive pressure to convert Warriors turnovers into points, leading by 19 after just one quarter against a young and inexperienced Rochester squad.

Aberdeen sophomore point guard Sophia Knutson led the Bobcats with 15 points, six assists and five steals.

Sophomore guard Bentley Brown had nine points while senior guard Abby Mainio scored seven points and grabbed eight rebounds for Aberdeen.

The Bobcats had 19 steals as a team and turned the ball over just eight times in the game, a stark contrast compared to a season-opening loss to Montesano a few days prior.

“It was kind of a different scenario than our first game at Montesano,” Aberdeen head coach Curtis Eccles said, adding his team was also able to make shots on Saturday, something it hadn’t done against the Bulldogs. “We actually hit some wide-open shots. … We shot much better and that was good to see.”

Aberdeen takes on reigning 2B State champ Napavine at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Napavine.

Rochester 1 7 0 6 – 15

Aberdeen 20 18 10 5 – 53

Aberdeen drops season-opening dual meets

Aberdeen lost a pair of dual meets on Thursday at Shelton High School.

The Bobcats lost to host Shelton 86-80 and River Ridge 98-69.

Aberdeen won two events – diving and the 200-yard medley relay – on the day.

The medley relay team of Jacob Hallak, Cole Nylander, Zeke Olson and Denny Linker won in a very competitive opening race, winning with a time of 1:53.31.

In the 1-meter dive, first-year diver Micah Schroeder scored 162.90 points for his first win of the season.

Hallak (100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke), Olson (100 breaststroke), Nylander (100 breast) and Linker (100 back) all hit district meet qualifying marks to start the season.

“We have a smaller squad this season with 12 swimmers and divers, overall, so everyone had to step in and perform,” Bobcats head coach Rob Burns said. “This was a great start to the season in performance. We may struggle to win dual meets, but this is a very fast and talented group of swimmers this season.”

Coach Burns cited Schroeder and Olson for their work in diving, Hallak for his overall day and Preston Williams for hitting personal-best marks.

On Wednesday, Aberdeen hosts Kelso in a inter-district meet at the Grays Harbor YMCA in Hoquiam.
