Liberty Christian 3, Willapa Valley 0
Willapa Valley’s run in the state tournament came to an end with a straight-set loss to Liberty Christian (Richland) Thursday morning at the SunDome in Yakima.
The 12th-seeded Vikings (14-8 overall) lost by scores of 25-21, 26-24 and 25-17 in the elimination bracket to the No. 16 Knights (17-11).
“Advancing to Thursday’s games was definitely a confidence boost for the team. It’s been quite a while since our school has advanced past the first day of the tournament, so to see them push each other to advance was really exciting,” Valley head coach Chelsea Kempton said. “We just came up short on defense and had a too many unforced errors. Our serving was probably our teams’ strongest and most consistent aspect throughout the tournament. … The team had their eyes set on a trophy round and while we were a match short of that goal, it’s hard not to be grateful for the successful season they had. We’re getting closer and closer to that goal and we’re already setting big team goals for next year. We see where we need to be next year in order to compete further at a state level. It’s been an incredible season with this team and we’re going to miss our senior girls so much. They set the bar high for the girls to follow. I have a lot of admiration for this team and the way they choose to compete and represent our community. I’m just really proud of how they came together as team this year.”
