Hoquiam 14, Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) 11

Hoquiam hammered hits en route to a 14-11 victory over Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) on Saturday at Dick Tagman Field in Montesano.

Playing in their first game after a week off due to Spring Break, the Grizzlies (1-7 overall) won for the first time this season thanks to an offense that had 18 hits, including three-hit games from center fielder Avery Brodhead, catcher Mya Standstipher, shortstop Lexi LaBounty and pitcher Hailee Burgess.

Hoquiam trailed 8-6 in the bottom of the fifth before exploding for seven runs. The Grizzlies took the lead in the frame when second baseman Avery Templer singled to drive in Brodhead and Jordyn Billie to take a 9-8 lead.

Hoquiam would record three more run-scoring hits in the inning to take a 13-8 lead.

The top five batters in the Grizzlies lineup went a combined 13 for 22 (.590) with 11 runs scored, and eight RBI.

Burgess earned her first win of the season for Hoquiam, allowing 11 earned runs on 13 hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts in pitching a complete game.

The Grizzlies right-hander also had a double and drove in four runs for Hoquiam.

“Big win coming off of Spring Break and starting the second half of the season on a good note,” Hoquiam head coach Brandon Templer said of the win.

Hoquiam faces Elma in a 1A Evergreen League game at 6 p.m. on Monday in Hoquiam.

A big second inning propelled Elma to a convincing 17-5 victory over Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) on Saturday at Montesano High School.

The Eagles (5-2) broke a 2-2 tie with nine runs in the bottom of the second inning, highlighted by a grand slam home run to center field off the bat of third baseman Lynsee Bednarik.

Chloe Donais and center fielder Mia Monroe followed with RBI singles to put Elma up 11-2 after two innings of play.

The Eagles added another four runs in the third on run-scoring singles from second baseman Kenna Monroe, Donais and catcher Raelynn Weld to go up 15-3.

A Bednarick RBI ground out and a Kenna Monroe run-scoring single in the fourth staked Elma to a 17-5 lead.

Keira White earned the victory for the Eagles, allowing five runs – two earned – on five hits without a walk and eight strikeouts.

White also led Elma at the dish, going 4 for 4 with a triple, a double and two runs scored.

Kenna Monroe went 3 for 3 with two runs and two stolen bases for Elma.

The Eagles face Hoquiam in a 1A Evergreen League game at 6 p.m. on Monday in Hoquiam.
