Rochester 12, Montesano 1
Montesano’s hopes of repeating as 1A Evergreen League champions took a step backward with a 12-1 loss to Rochester on Monday in Rochester.
In a rare mercy-rule defeat for the Bulldogs (14-5, 6-1 1A Evergreen), Rochester took the lead thanks to a three-run home run off the bat of Warriors pitcher and last season’s 2A Evergreen Conference MVP Layna Demers.
Eight straight batters would reach base for Rochester, culminating with a Cheyenne Justice three-run double to put Rochester up 8-1.
The first six Warriors batters reached base in the second as Rochester put the game in 10-run rule territory when a Montesano error allowed Hailey Boyd to score Rochester’s 11th run.
“Rochester crushed the ball tonight,” Monte head coach Pat Pace said. “Our defense made a couple errors, but Rochester just took it to us.”
Montesano scored its lone run of the game in the top of the first inning when infielder Lex Stanfield drove in outfielder Liv Robinson with a double.
But the Bulldogs offense struggled to muster up much against Demers, who scattered five hits with a walk and four strikeouts to earn the victory.
Violet Prince took the loss, allowing 11 earned runs on nine hits and three walks with two strikeouts in Monte’s disastrous first inning.
Grace Gooding allowed one unearned run on three hits and two walks with three strikeouts in three innings of relief.
The loss means the Bulldogs will need a win over Rochester when the two teams meet again at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday in Montesano, and hope for some unlikely tiebreaker magic to leapfrog the Warriors.
