Hoquiam and Montesano moved up in the league standings with wins on Thursday.

Hoquiam 11, Eatonville 7

Hoquiam moved into third place in the 1A Evergreen League with an 11-7 victory over Eatonville on Thursday at John Gable Park in Hoquiam.

The Grizzlies (4-9 overall, 2-2 1A Evergreen) trailed 3-0 after Eatonville’s Sara Smith belted a three-run home run off Hoquiam starter Kayte Sauer in the in the top of the first inning.

Hoquiam responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning when Mya Standstipher – on board after a Cruisers error to leadoff the frame – scored on an error committed during a sacrifice bunt by Chloey Deitrick.

Two batters later, Deitrick scampered home on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 3-2.

Hoquiam would take the lead in the bottom of the third, scoring four runs on three Eatonville errors and a Lexi LaBounty RBI single.

Eatonville tied the game a half-inning later, scoring three runs on a bases-clearing double by Smith.

But Hoquiam would not be denied, plating a run on an error and an RBI single by Macy Dhooghe in the fourth and adding two more runs on a bases-loaded walk to Deitrick and a Prosch RBI single in the fifth.

The Grizzlies added a run in the sixth when Avery Howard doubled to lead off the inning and came across to score on a Sauer single.

That was enough run support for Sauer, who settled in to allow one run over the final three innings of the game to secure the victory.

Four of Sauer’s seven runs allowed were earned and the senior pitcher struck out 11 with just two walks in earning the win.

LaBounty and Sauer had two hits apiece to lead the Grizzlies’ offense.

With the win, Hoquiam moves a half-game ahead of the Cruisers for third place in the 1A Evergreen League.

The win was the first for the Grizzlies’ new head coach Matti Ekerson, who took over for John Matagora, who resigned on Thursday after less than one season as head coach due to personal reasons, according to Hoquiam school officials.

Hoquiam faces Pe Ell-Willapa Valley at 3:30 p.m on Saturday in Montesano.

Montesano had little trouble dispatching of Tenino with a 12-2 five-inning victory on Thursday at Dick Tagman Field in Montesano.

The Bulld0gs (7-3, 3-0 1A Evergreen) scored three in the bottom of the first on an RBI double by senior Riley Timmons, a run-scoring single by first baseman Kylee Wisdom and a RBI double by starting pitcher Kaitlyn Trail.

Monte went up 8-0 with five runs in the second. Catcher Ali Parkin, Wisdom and second baseman Alyssa Maldonado each drove in runs with singles in the frame, which also included a one-out triple by Tieander Olson.

After Tenino (2-13, 0-6) scored a pair of runs in the top of the third, Monte added three more in the bottom of the inning highlighted by a Parkin two-run home run.

The Bulldogs put the game in mercy-rule territory when pinch-runner Ember Jones – in for Wintrip after a leadoff triple – scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Jaelyn Butterfield.

Trail worked around a two-on, two-out situation to end the fifth and give Monte the 12-2 win.

Trail pitched all five innings, allowing two runs – none earned – on seven hits with a walk and six strikeouts.

Parkin led Monte’s offense with three hits, a triple, a home run and three RBI.

Timmons added a double and a triple for a Bulldogs offense that had 13 hits in the game, seven for extra bases including four triples.

The Bulldogs are tied with Elma atop the 1A Evergreen League.

Montesano will host Rochester at 8 p.m. on Saturday.
