In the top of the fifth, the Ravens scored a run on a Lexi Vircks RBI single followed by Kaylee Walker belting a pitch over the left-center field fence for a two-run home run and 5-1 lead.

An error, a hit batter and an additional error allowed the Ravens’ Bailee Brader to score for a 6-1 lead.

A Montesano dropped third strike-passed ball allowed the top of the sixth to continue, and Auburn Riverside made the Bulldogs pay when Vircks stole home for the game’s final run.

Timmons took the loss, allowing six runs – five earned – on six hits and a walk with four strikeouts in 4 1-3 innings pitched.

Grace Gooding allowed one run – none earned – on two hits with six strikeouts in 2 2-3 innings pitched.

Montesano committed three errors in the game and made several “little” mistakes – such as imprecise throws and missed tags – that gave Auburn Riverside extra opportunities on offense.

“When you looked at their defense and then at our defense, we just made too many errors,” Monte head coach Pat Pace said. “We just need to step it up and we need to play a little better. We are a mature team and we’re halfway through the season. We’ve got to clean things up and we can’t leave runners on base.”

Pace said Tuesday’s game against a quality 3A opponent provided some good intel for both his team and coaching staff.

“Riley threw yesterday and we pushed it today to see what she could do back-to-back days,” said Pace, referencing Timmons’ performance in a 20-3 win over Tenino on Monday. “We pushed her one too many innings and I thought Grace (Gooding) came in and did a great job. The difference in speed threw them off a little bit.”

The Bulldogs are back in action against Tenino at 4 p.m. Thursday in Montesano.
