Montesano 7, Rochester 3

Playing in its first home game under the bright new lights at Dick Tagman Field, Montesano earned a 7-3 non-league victory over Rochester on Saturday in Montesano.

The game represented the first night home game for the Bulldogs (8-3 overall) in approximately 20 years according to head coach Pat Pace, sans a night game at Jack Rottle Field during construction of their current home facilities in 2018.

Monte’s players made the adjustment just fine despite dealing not only with the lights but two rain delays.

After Rochester (6-7) scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, the Bulldogs responded to tie the game with a Riley Timmons RBI double and a run-scoring single off the bat of shortstop Addi Kersker.

Monte took the lead when Kersker singled home pinch-runners Jaelyn Butterfield and Ember Jones for a 4-2 advantage.

After a Kylee Wisdom single, Kersker would cross the plate on a passed ball to make it a 5-3 game in the bottom of the third.

In the fourth, right fielder Carsyn Wintrip led off with a double and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt from center fielder Adda Potts. Left fielder Liv Robinson pushed Wintrip across on a fielder’s choice ground out for a 6-2 lead.

Timmons ran into trouble with a leadoff walk and was relieved by Grace Gooding in the sixth. Addison Morgan then reached on a dropped third strike stole second and then scored on a delayed steal, allowing Arissa LeBaron to score on the throw down to second base, making it a 6-3 game.

Gooding struck out Piper Quarnstrom followed by catcher Ali Parkin picking off Morgan at third base to end the threat.

Wintrip reached on an error and came in to score on an Alli Mills single in the seventh as Monte led 7-3 heading into the seventh.

Rochester’s Sara Haury doubled with one out in the seventh and advanced to third on a ground out.

The game ended when Haury was called out on the base paths after interfering with Monte third baseman Lex Stanfield.

Playing under the lights didn’t seem to bother Montesano’s defense as the Bulldogs played error-free softball that included three picks by Wisdom at first and two snares of line drives by Wintrip, including a running catch in the gap to take away an extra-base hit from McKenna Vassar in the fourth.

“I don’t think the lights were a factor at all,” Pace said. “We kind of put it all together tonight. … We had a good defense behind our pitchers and (Timmons and Gooding) threw really well.”

“A lot of us have been playing softball for a really long time and we’ve had our fair share of travel-ball games under the lights, so it’s not as new to us as it is to some other people,” Wintrip said.

Timmons got the win, allowing three runs on four hits with five walks and a pair of strikeouts in five innings pitched.

Gooding pitched two innings in mop-up duty, allowing one hit without a walk while striking out three.

First pitch had a later than normal 8 p.m. start time and, after two separate rain delays, the game wrapped up after 10 p.m. But none of that put a damper on the experience.

“It’s super cool. It’s really special to me because it’s my senior year and I really like the idea that my last year here is the first year we get to do all this stuff,” Wintrip said. “We do really well facing adversity. The weather and playing under the lights definitely was a challenge for us, but we’re a team and a sisterhood and when we face adversity, we don’t struggle. When we get hot, we stay hot.”

I thought it was a great experience,” Pace said. “It was cold, we had rain and we still had a lot of fans here for the first night we had lights. I’m pretty happy and I know the girls were excited to be here and play in it.”

Monte plays at Elma at 4 p.m. on Monday.
