Adna 19, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 5

It wasn’t the top-tier showdown Pe Ell-Willapa Valley was hoping it would be.

The Titans allowed 13 runs in the first inning en route to a 19-5 mercy-rule loss to defending state champion Adna on Monday at Adna High School.

PWV (5-2 overall) struggled to get out of the first inning against the Pirates (3-2), a team they last faced in the state semifinals a season ago.

The first seven Pirates reached base against PWV starting pitcher Jillian Hodel – including a grand slam home run from Brytin Dollarhyde – to take a 6-0 lead before the Titans recorded an out.

Leading 10-0 still with one out in the frame, Alyssa Carroll hit a three-run, inside-the-park home run to put Adna up 13-0.

The Titans trailed 17-0 after Adna scored four runs in the fourth off PWV reliever Eliza Barnum.

PWV broke the shutout bid when catcher Sophia Milanowski drove in Hodel with a one-out single in the top of the fourth inning.

In the top of the fifth, PWV’s offense broke through for four runs, including a two-run shot over the center-field fence by Milanowski, making it a 19-5 final score.

Adna did what PWV’s offense had been doing to its opponents this season: Hitting often and hitting with power. The Pirates tallied 14 hits in the game – five for extra bases – and got a base hit from all nine Pirates in the lineup.

Danika Hallom, Carroll and Dollarhyde drove in for runs apiece for the Pirates.

Hodel and Barnum combined to allow 19 runs on 14 hits with nine walks and six strikeouts over four innings.

The Titans committed three errors, leading to nine unearned runs against the two-time defending state champs.

PWV hosts Forks for a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8.
