Hoquiam meet
Hoquiam’s Sea Breeze Oval saw dozens of personal-records fall in a landmark 1A Evergreen League meet for the Grizzlies on Wednesday at Hoquiam High School.
A total of 35 personal-bests were broken by Grizzlies student-athletes at a home meet were the recently implemented electronic timing system was implemented as the improvements to Hoquiam’s athletic facilities continued under Athletic Director Shane Krohn.
The Grizzlies boys team got even wins from sophomore Brayden Gonzalez with a PR mark of 121 feet, one inch in the javelin and senior Roman Jones in the pole vault.
Hoquiam’s 4×400-meter relay team of Brandon Daniel, Ryker Maxfield, Junior Soto and Oliver Bryson also won with a time of 3:54.08.
The Grizzlies’ girls team was led by multi-event winners in freshman RenaèJah Burtenshaw (100, long jump) and junior Sydney Gordon (shot put, discus).
Hoquiam sophomore Piper Stankavich won the high jump with Grizzlies teammate Keren Parra placing first in the pole vault.
Hoquiam’s 4×100-meter relay team of Emily Brodhead, Brittany Alcala, Katlyn Brodhead and Burtenshaw placed first with a time of 52.97.
“We love to focus on the process of improvement instead of just the outcome of place,” Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan said. “I would like to give a special thanks to our booster club, athletic director, maintenance department, and IT department for purchasing and getting the facilities ready to use a new timing system. Took a lot of people working together to make this happen for today’s meet.”

Elma wins home league meet
The Elma Eagles swept both the boys and girls team titles at a 1A Evergreen League meet on Wednesday at Elma High School.
The Eagles boys team placed first with 118 points led by sophomore sprinter Ricardo Guadarrama, who won both the 100 and 200-meter sprints.
Other event winners for Elma were sophomore Frank Roberts (3,200), freshman Logan Mullins (110 hurdles), senior Ryder Nelson (300 hurdles), freshman Braeden Dryden (high jump) and the 4×400 relay team.
Montesano placed second with 81 points and were led by multi-event winners in junior Benny Anderson (800, 1600) and senior Shaun Straka (shot put, discus).
The Bulldogs also had even wins from junior Jerrell Bayless (400), junior Gavin Root (javelin) and the 4×100 relay team.
The Eagles girls team won with 88.5 points and were led by event-winners Destiny Whipple (800), Arya Tonseth (discus) and the 4×200 and 4×400 relay teams.
Montesano placed third behind Naselle with 60 points.
The Bulldogs were led by winners Hailey McElroy (100, 200), Willow Valentin (shot put), Paige Busz (javelin) and the 4×100 relay team.
