Hoquiam leads local contingent at Mt. Tahoma Track Festival

Hoquiam’s RanaèJah Burtenshaw and Sydney Gordon led a small contingent of top Twin Harbors track and field stars at the Mt. Tahoma Track Festival on Saturday in Tahoma.

Burtenshaw has emerged as one of the fastest sprinters in the state in her freshman season and further proved it by running a 12.78 to win the girls 100 meters, beating North Thurston’s Michayla Kelly by 0.22.

Burtenshaw placed fourth in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 16 feet, four inches and anchored the Grizzlies 4×100-meter relay team of Emily Brodhead, Brittany Alcala and Katlyn Brodhead that placed sixth with a time of 52.99.

Gordon won the girls shot put with a throw of 34-10, besting King’s Kaelynn Bahnmiller by 3.5 inches.

Aberdeen had a strong contingent of its top competitors place at the meet to finish tied with Rainier Beach for 13th with 21 points.

The Bobcats were led by junior Rylee Brooks, who placed third on both the shot put (34-02) and discus (105-07 PR), junior Haylee Jahner, who took third in the high jump (4-08), and sophomores Ailyn Haggard and Mia Hallak, who placed third and fourth, respectively in the 800, both with personal-best times.

Montesano’s lone competitor in the girls competition was sophomore standout Haley Schweppe, who placed fourth overall with a time of 5:15.15 in the girls Elite 1,600-meter race.

In the boys competition, Aberdeen and Hoquiam placed ninth and 10th, respectively, out of a 30-team field.

The Bobcats were paced by senior Henry Nelson with a second-place finish in the 800 (1:56.86) and freshman Cecil Gumaelius, who took third in the 3200 (10:22.37 PR).

Senior Adonis Hammonds placed fifth in the high jump (5-08) and junior Landon Hamblin placed sixth in the shot put for the Bobcats (42-01).

Aberdeen finished with 32 points to place one point behind Garfield.

The Grizzlies were led by distance runner Junior Soto and Ryker Maxfield and hurdler Oliver Bryson.

Soto placed fourth in the boys 3,200 with a time of 10:30.63 while Maxfield took fifth in the boys Elite 3,200 with a personal-best run of 10:02.70.

Bryson placed fifth overall in the 300-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 44.42.

Hoquiam placed 10th overall with 28 points.

Elma sweeps team titles at Henrie-Weisel Invitational

Elma swept the team titles at the Henrie-Weisel Invitational on Thursday at Raymond-High School.

Led by a sweep of the short sprint races by sophomore standout Ricardo Guararrama, the Eagles scored 153 points to place first overall, 39 points better than second-place Montesano.

Guadarrama also anchored the Eagles victorious 4×100-meter relay team of Jordan Meadows, Ryder Nelson and Cohen Finch (45.22).

Nelson won the 300 hurdles with a time of 42.70 for Elma, which also got wins from the 4×100 thrower’s relay team (Sam Widsom, Kohan Morrison, Luke Schneider, Pepper Holcomb) and 4×400 relay team (Elijah Roberts, Ashton Brown, Aaron Tuttle, Guadarrama).

The Eagles girls team totalled 146 points to beat Naselle by 10 points, earning the team title in the process.

Elma’s Georgia Burkhart led the way with wins in the 300 hurdles (53.20) and triple jump (30-11).

Elma’s girls 4×200 relay team of Emily Escoffon, Zippy Valentine, Audreauna Kanios and Beta Valentine won with a time of 2:00.61.
