Montesano locked up a league title while Hoquiam and Ocosta stumbled on their way to the district playoffs as we review a busy Tuesday evening full of Twin Harbors prep volleyball games.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Montesano 3, Rochester 0

Montesano locked up the top spot in the 1A Evergreen League with a straight-set Senior Night victory over Rochester on Tuesday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (12-3, 7-0 1A Evergreen) came out strong, winning the first two sets by scores of 25-9 and 25-8 over the winless Warriors (0-14, 0-6).

But a lack of communication led to what nearly turned out to be a disastrous Game 3 before Monte refocused to pick up the 25-22 victory and end the match.

“The girls played well tonight in the first two sets. In the third set, they stopped talking and the wheels started to fall off the bus, but we were able to pull it together and get the win,” Monte head coach Cindy Wecker said. “Being that it was our last home match, we honored or seniors tonight. … This is an incredibly talented group of girls and even though I am sad that this was their last time on our home court, we still have a lot of volleyball left to play.”

Monte honored seniors Kolie Broten, Liv Robinson, Karissa Otterstetter, Kylee Wisdom and Kaila Hatton on Senior Night.

The Bulldogs close out league play at Elma at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Tenino 3, Hoquiam 2

Hoquiam’s bid to secure second place in the league standings hit a snag with a 3-2 loss to Tenino on Tuesday in Tenino.

Playing with different lineups due to injuries and illness, the Grizzlies (8-6, 3-3 1A Evergreen) won the first set 25-21 before Tenino (8-7, 4-3) tied it at 1-1 with a 25-14 Game 2 win.

The Beavers took a 2-1 lead with a 25-19 win in the third game followed by Hoquiam pulling out a gritty 25-23 win in Game 4.

The fifth set went to extra points, with Hoquiam falling short 17-15 in the game and 3-2 for the match.

“We just had too many errors all around to be able to pull out a win. Credit to Tenino, they played very clean, scrappy volleyball tonight. They passed well in serve-receive and dug up everything we threw at them,” Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich said. “I’m proud of the girls that stepped up. We really just couldn’t find our rhythm, but we learned a lot from this and will be better prepared the next time we step onto the court.

Libero Lexi LaBounty had 23 digs to lead the Hoquiam defense while setter Katlyn Brodhead had 38 assists, mostly to RanaeJah Burtenshaw (18 kills) and Aaliyah Kennedy (20 kills).

Hoquiam sits in third place, a half-game behind Tenino in the league standings and will face Elma at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday in Elma.

Raymond-South Bend 3, North Beach 2

Raymond-South Bend had to fight off a scrappy North Beach squad for a 3-2 win on Tuesday in Ocean Shores.

Twenty-four hours after beating Elma in a non-league game, the Ravens (6-5, 4-1 2B Pacific) showed signs of fatigue in the 25-7, 14-25, 25-14, 16-25 and 15-6 victory over the Hyaks (3-7, 3-4).

“As well as we played last night equals how much we struggled today,” RSB head coach Julie Jewell said. “Our serve-receive was abysmal (40% as a team) and our offense was inconsistent as a result. But an ugly win is still a win, and this was an important one for us.

North Beach was led by junior Jazmine Goldman with 12 kills, four aces and a 90% service rating.

North Beach senior Kayla Eastman had eight kills and six touches on RSB shots, making life at the net tough for the Ravens.

Hyaks outside hitter Maylyn Turner moved from her normal position at setter to record six kills, seven aces and post a 92% service rating.

“I’m so proud of the work the girls put in and the improvement they have made over the weeks,” Hyaks head coach Jessica Vicente said. “We are moving up in our play as we enter the second half of our season, which is exciting.”

RSB sits a in second place, a half-game behind Forks for the top spot in the league.

The Ravens host Willapa Valley in a non-league match at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

North Beach sits in third place in the Pacific League and will take on Chief Leschi in a league game at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Puyallup.

Naselle 3, Ocosta 1

The race for a 1B Coastal League title got a little tighter with Ocosta’s 3-1 loss to Naselle on Tuesday at Naselle High School.

The first-place Wildcats (12-2, 10-1 1B Coastal) were upset by the fourth-place Comets (8-5, 6-4) by scores of 25-23, 19-25, 25-14 and 25-21.

“We played hard tonight, however, Naselle showed up tough,” Ocosta head coach Erin Snider said. “Naselle’s defense kept us limited in kills and that hurt us. I am pleased with our performance. We will move forward and learn from tonight’s loss.”

Ocosta’s Anna Davis and Jolissa Schlegel had six and seven kills, respectively, while setter Millie Tucker was a perfect 12 of 12 from the service line.

Natalie Gruber had 12 digs while libero Noel Cuzdey went 38 for 42 in serve reception to lead Ocosta’s defense.

Ocosta sits one game up on Taholah for the top spot in the league standings.

The Wildcats host Mary M. Knight in a league game at 7 p.m. Thursday at Ocosta High School in Westport.

Willapa Valley 3, Mary M. Knight 0

Willapa Valley remained firmly in third place in the 1B Coastal League after a straight-set win over Mary M. Knight on Tuesday at Willapa Valley High School in Menlo.

The Vikings (10-4, 8-4 1B Coastal) won by scores of 25-18, 25-14 and 25-11 over the visiting Owls (6-8, 4-7).

“Tonight, we wanted to put an emphasis on passing and serving. Our serving is improving game by game. Once we found our rhythm, passing improved as well,” Vikings head coach Chelsea Kempton said. “I’m happy with how everyone played together tonight. We’re very versatile and I am excited to continue improving day by day.”

Valley’s balanced attack was led by senior libero Alana Neva (13 digs, 5 aces), senior setter Sam Sheary (6 kills, 4 assists, 3 aces) and freshman middle blocker Tylar Keeton (6 kills).

The Vikings are a game up on Naselle in the win column and will face Raymond-South Bend in a non-league game set for 7 p.m. on Thursday at Raymond High School.
