PREP VOLLEYBALL

Montesano 3, Hoquiam 1

Over the past few seasons, the road to a 1A Evergreen League title ran through Hoquiam.

The surging Montesano Bulldogs would like that road to take a detour.

Monte played what head coach Cindy Wecker said was its “most complete game” of the season in earning a 3-1 win over Hoquaim on Tuesday at Montesano High School.

The Bulldogs (5-6 overall, 4-0 1A Evergreen) consistently attacked, served effectively and matched Hoquiam’s patented scrappiness en route to a 25-17, 23-25, 25-14 and 25-20 victory.

“Tonight, it all came together,” Wecker said. “Our serving was great, we played great defense and we attacked the ball. Every timeout we said, ‘Keep attacking, just keep attacking.’ (Hoquiam) was off a little bit and we took advantage of it.”

After Monte took the first set 25-17, Hoquiam (8-4, 3-1) fell behind 11-3 in the second set but rallied behind a long service streak from senior middle blocker Kristina Goulet.

Hoquiam got to within a point at 11-10 on a block from junior middle blocker Hayden Brook-Andrew.

The Bulldogs responded by going on a 7-1 run to take an 18-11 lead.

Hoquiam continued to apply pressure, tying the game at 19-all and took a two-point lead after a Monte ball into the net followed by a Goulet kill.

Tied at 23, Hoquiam closed out the improbable comeback when Goulet blocked a shot from Monte middle blocker Kylee Wisdom followed by a Goulet kill off a Wisdom block attempt for a 25-23 win, knotting the match up at one game apiece.

But despite losing a big early lead in Game 2, Monte didn’t falter and remained focused in Game 3. The Bulldogs opened up a 16-4 lead in the third chapter, with setter Karissa Otterstetter recording three kills and two blocks to lead the way.

Hoquiam would get as close as six points after a long service streak from senior outside hitter Faith Prosch cut Monte’s lead to 19-13.

But the Bulldogs would not be denied, closing out the game on a shot down the line from Liv Robinson for a 25-14 win and a 2-1 lead.

“We talked about how the energy got low and how they had the momentum on their side and we needed to bring it back,” said Wisdom of the team’s strategy entering Game 3.

The fourth game stayed close as the two teams were tied three times throughout and remained within three points of one another until an Otterstetter kill put the Bulldogs up 19-15 and forced a Hoquiam time out.

A push shot from Prosch followed by two consecutive Monte shots sailing out of bounds cut the Monte lead to 19-18.

Hoquiam kept it close over the final points of the match, but couldn’t get over the hump as Monte closed out the game on a Otterstetter shot that tipped off the block of Goulet and sailed long for a 25-20 win, taking the match 3-1.

“We talked more as a team, which brought the energy and momentum into our side of the court, and we just kept hitting at them and just kept going,” said Wisdom, who had a team high 14 kills for Montesano. “It was a really big win and it helps us know where we are at and how we can keep getting better.”

“I think we feel really good about it,” Wecker said of the league victory that propelled Monte into sole possession of the league’s top spot by a game over the Grizzlies. “Honestly, every game night is a new night and you just don’t know what’s going to come out on the floor. We’ve had nights where we completely struggled. Tonight wasn’t one of those nights.”

Hoquiam was without the services of setter Katlyn Brodhead down the stretch after she left the rotation in the second game and did not return due to illness.

Though her replacement, freshman Mya Standstipher “did great,” according to Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich, the Hoquiam offense wasn’t the same without Brodhead running the offense.

“When you take a big piece of the puzzle out, it’s going to change the dynamics on the court and that happened,” said Bozich, adding other contributing factors were more impactful. “The errors on serve receive (were a bigger reason for the loss). It made our setters have to run and didn’t give them time to put up a good ball for the offense.”

Hoquiam plays at Elma at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Montesano travels to Tenino to take on the Beavers, also at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
