A total of four Twin Harbors wrestlers won individual championships at their respective regional championships on Saturday.
Montesano, Elma wrestlers claim regional championships
Three Twin Harbors wrestlers walked away with regional championships at the conclusion of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s 1A Region 1 Championships on Saturday in Hoquiam.
Montesano wrestlers Cole Ekerson and Mateo Sanchez and Elma grappler Austin Salazar each took first place in their respective weight classes to earn regional titles.
Ekerson defeated Eatonville’s Ty Whitney with a thrilling 6-4 victory in overtime of the 132 pound final match, avenging last week’s defeat to Whitney in overtime of the finals at the sub-regional meet.
Sanchez defeated Eatvonville’s Hunter Sonnenberg 9-7 to earn the title in the 182 pound class and help Montesano to a fifth-place team finish with 158 points.
Other top placers for Montesano were Jacob Salstrom (120, 2nd), Jared Whisenhunt (152, 4th), Jesse Cervantes (220, 4th) and Alex Delgado (285, 5th).
Elma was led by Salazar, who pinned La Center’s Lane Roberts at the 2:56 mark to claim the 220 pound championship.
Eagles wrestlers Aiden McCain (195, 5th) and Donovan Bishop (285, 3rd) also placed in the top five of their weight classes to help Elma to a No. 9 finish with 75 points.
Hoquiam placed 14th as a team with 47 points. The Grizzlies were led by Anthony Burtenshaw (170 pounds) and Siosi Villareal (220), each of whom placed fifth in their respective weight classes.

Aberdeen places third at regional meet
Aberdeen’s Drew Lock led a contingent of Bobcats wrestlers to a third-place team finish at the WIAA 2A Region 3 Championships on Saturday in Washougal.
Lock pinned Woodland’s Mason Rickard at 5:32 of the 126 pound title match to win the regional championship, Aberdeen’s lone individual title of the meet.
But Lock wasn’t the only Bobcat to hold a spot on the medal stand as multiple Aberdeen grapplers placed in the top five of their respective weight classes.
Talatheon Warness (106), Aiden Watkins (152), Liam Heikkila (195) and Erick Hayter-Ramsey (285) each placed second in their weight classes while Mikey Hatton (113) and Joel Nelson (120) each took fourth.
Aberdeen finished with 130.5 points to place third as a team behind WF West (296) and host Washougal (149.3).
“Congratulations to the whole team on all their accomplishments this year,” Aberdeen head coach Jeff Hatton said. “They should all hold their heads up high. I am proud to have coached them.”

Willapa Harbor’s Portmann, North Beach’s Fruh win regional titles
Willapa Harbor’s Tyson Portmann and North Beach’s Westin Fruh won their respective weight-class crowns at the WIAA 1B/2B Region 1 Championships on Saturday in Adna.
Portmann quickly pinned Stevenson’s Solomon Mahoney just 39 seconds into the title match of the 132 pound weight class to earn the championship.
Fruh defeated Darrington’s Landen Brown at the 5:23 mark to claim the 195 pound championship.
Other Twin Harbors wrestlers to place in the top three of their respective weight classes were North Beach’s Wyeland Lomedico (120, 2nd) and Johnathan Jerome (220, 3rd); Willapa Harbor’s Carson Borden (126, 3rd) and Lucas Swogger (138, 3rd); and Ocosta’s Dylan Hollingsworth (160, 3rd).
