Smith won all three of her matches on Saturday via pinfall, culminating with a victory over Forks’ Kinley Rondeau at 2:43 to claim the 100-pound championship.

For Montesano head coach Jeff Klinger, depth and performance were his team’s keys to victory.

“It’s definitely helped that we’ve grown as a team here in Montesano,” he said, noting Monte had 22 wrestlers on its roster. “They did what they were supposed to do. We wrestled our best and plateaued at the right time. We want to peak in the postseason. … We now have girls that are taking third that didn’t even win two matches the first tournament they went to this year. That’s big. And pinning, our girls pinned today. When you pin in the postseason, that’s how you win team trophies.”

Aberdeen wins district meet

The Aberdeen Bobcats continued to prove they are one of the state’s premiere girls wrestling programs with a team title at the WIAA 2A District 4 Championships on Saturday at Hudson’s Bay High School in Vancouver.

Aberdeen scored 271.5 points to win the team championship, had three individual weight-class winners and will be advancing 17 wrestlers to the state meet.

Micah Turpin (105 pounds), Felicia Bell (124) and Kadence Braaten (140) each won their weight class with pinfall victories.

Turpin won via fall over teammate Daisy Vessey at 3:01 of the 105-pound championship match.

Bell, Aberdeen’s all-time girls win leader, defeated W.F. West’s Aurora Martin via fall at 5:20 to claim the 125-pound title.

Braaten pinned Ridgefield’s Nicolette Hulse at 2:47 to secure the 140-pound championship.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the coaching staff and our girls. It was a day full of happy tears advancing so many of our team members. We knew we had the possibility with the new classifications this season, but to advance 17 to the Tacoma Dome was a greater than we even expected,” Bobcats head coach Craig Yakovich said. “Adding another team title to wall in Sam Benn Gym was definitely a goal to our veteran wrestlers and they definitely didn’t disappoint. We had some great performances this weekend. We had seven wrestlers in the finals, three individual champions and all eight of our seniors entered advanced to the state tournament. Not much more a coach could ask for.
