Raymond’s Gardner and a host of Twin Harbors stars win at Spudder Classic

Seagulls senior named Girls Most Outstanding Athlete; Hoquiam’s Straka, Ocosta’s Idso also win

Raymond senior Kyra Gardner led a handful of Twin Harbors athletes that picked up wins at the Spudder Track & Field Classic on Friday at Ridgefield High School.

Despite rain, wind and hail pummeling the event, Gardner won four events in the 30-team meet that featured top-level prep athletes from both Washington and Oregon.

Gardner won the girls 100-meter hurdles (16.37), the high jump (5 feet, 4 inches), the long jump (16-09), and the triple jump (35-07.50) to be named the Girls Most Outstanding Athlete of the meet and lead the Raymond girls to a sixth-place finish with 42 points.

Hoquiam’s Tyara Straka continued her dominance in the throwing events this season, cruising to victories in both the girls shot put (44-10) and discus (117-05).

The Montesano 4×200 relay team of Alayna Olson, Sierra Birdsall, Lilly Causey and Jaiden Morrison picked up a victory with a time of 1:51.24, besting second-place King’s Way Christian by 1.18 seconds.

Other top performers in the girls competition were Montesano’s Samantha Schweppe (3200, 12:38.51 PR, 3rd), Willapa Valley’s Lauryn McGough (javelin, 114-06 PR, 2nd), North Beach’s Malia Cox (long jump, 15-10, 3rd), and Raymond Karsyn Freeman, who placed fourth in the pole vault with a personal-record mark of nine feet-flat, tying a Seagulls school record in the process.

Ocosta senior Matthew Idso earned a victory in the boys 400 with a time of 51.57, leading the Wildcats to a fourth-place finish with 40.5 points.

Ocosta also picked up a win with its boys 4×400 relay team, with Michael Reynolds, Matthew Idso, Dylan Todd and William Idso placing ahead of second-place Toledo (3:39.41) and third-place Columbia River (3:40.34) with a time of 3:36.41.

Other top placers in the boys competition were Ocosta’s William Idso (100, 11.24, 3rd; 200, 22.93, 2nd; high jump, 5-10, 3rd tie), Montesano’s Jesse Anderson (800, 2:04.61 PR, 3rd), Raymond’s Tre’ Seydel (300 hurdles, 42.90, 2nd; high jump, 5-10, 3rd tie), Elma’s Landon Ritter (shot put, 43-08 PR, 2nd), South Bend’s Robby Stigall (discus, 131-08, 2nd), Willapa Valley’s Chris Western (pole vault, 12-06, 2nd), Raymond’s Morgan Anderson (pole vault, 11-06; triple jump, 38-10, 3rd) and North Beach’s Josh Bighead (triple jump, 39-08, 2nd).

Aberdeen competes at Shaner invite

The Aberdeen boys and girls track and field team competed at the 56th Bob Shaner Invitational on Friday at Tumwater High School.

The Bobcats were led by Andrew Troeh, who won the boys high jump event with a mark of 6-00.

Aberdeen also got top-three finishes from Julian Campos (1600, 4:28.11, 2nd) and Collin Babineau (300 hurdles, 42.96 PR, 2nd), Tyler Bates (discus, 145-03, 3rd) and the boys 4×400 relay team (Henry Nelson, Julian Campos, Will Boling, Omar Jonas Urbina, 3:31.38, 3rd).

The Bobcats boys team finished with 79 points to place fourth in the team standings.
