Roundup: Aberdeen places third at districts, will send five to state meet

Aberdeen will be sending five athletes to the state tournament after finishing third as a team at the 2A District 4 Boys Swimming Championships on Saturday at Mark Morris High School.

The Bobcats were led by sophomore Denny Linker and the 200 medley relay team, each earning a trip to the WIAA State Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday and Saturday at the King County Aquatic Center in Federal Way.

Linker placed third in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:17.88 to earn a spot on the podium and punch his ticket to the state meet.

The Aberdeen 4×50 medley relay team of sophomore Jacob Hallak, freshman Zeke Olson, senior Zach Parker and Linker earned a spot at state with a time of 1:55.16 to place fourth in the event.

“Denny is one of our hardest workers on the team. To see him qualify for state was a big moment for everyone, especially his teammates who all celebrated the swim in the 200 individual medley,” Aberdeen head coach Rob Burns said. “Also, to learn we picked up an entry for the 200 medley relay is a reward for everyone. All told, this was a great day to be a Bobcat and we will be swimming for another week. This is a bonus and the boys are prepared to perform at the state meet.”

Aberdeen placed third overall with 150 points.

Hockinson won the meet with 278 points with Shelton (226 points, 2nd), Mark Morris (147, 4th) and Fort Vancouver (131, 5th) rounding out the top five.

“I couldn’t be more proud of the effort and the performances the team put in this weekend,” Burns said. “It was a very, very fast meet and this district will have a really good representation at the state meet.”

GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Ridgefield 61, Aberdeen 54

Aberdeen’s season came to an end after suffering a 61-54 overtime loss to Ridgefield in a 2A District 4 Tournament elimination game on Monday at Tumwater High School.

Aberdeen (14-7 overall) trailed 24-22 at the half and managed to tie the game at 41-all at the end of the third quarter thanks to junior Jaylynn Phimmasone and senior Maddie Gore, who scored seven and six points apiece in the frame, respectively.

With the Bobcats up 51-50 in the final 30 seconds of the game, a Bobcats foul led to Ridgefield’s Morgan Goode converting 1 of 2 free throws with seven seconds left on the clock to send the game to overtime.

In the extra period, Ridgefield’s Elizabeth Swift hit back-to-back threes that turned out to be the difference as the Bobcats only managed three points in overtime.

Gore led Aberdeen with 16 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and two steals to cap a senior season in which she averaged 21.2 points per game.

Annie Troeh (12 points, 4 steals, 2 rebounds) and Jaylynn Phimmasone (11 points, 2 rebounds) also scored in double figures for the Bobcats.

“We didn’t get as far as I wanted but I’m very proud of our 14-win season,” Aberdeen head coach Rachel Wenzel said after guiding the Bobcats to their second-straight berth in the district tournament. “Our program will have a huge hole with Maddie Gore leaving and the leadership of Litzy Orona, but other girls have stepped up this year and I am optimistic that the program will keep moving forward next year.”
