BOYS PREP SOCCER

Aberdeen 6, Hoquiam 0

It was a one-sided affair in the boys soccer version of the Myrtle Street Rivalry on Monday.

Aberdeen controlled the pitch en route to a 6-0 victory over Hoquiam at a rain-soaked Stewart Field in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (1-1 overall) played in Hoquiam’s end for the majority of the game and had plenty to show for it on the scoreboard.

Aberdeen took the lead just seven minutes into the game when junior forward/midfielder Marc Avila scored an unassisted goal.

The Bobcats doubled their lead in the 28th minute when junior forward Evan Cone took a pass from senior midfielder Chris Garcia, worked his way down the side, got around his defender and slotted a shot inside the far post.

With just under five minutes left to go in the first half, Avila scored his second of the match on Garcia’s second assist of the game to stake Aberdeen to a comfortable 3-0 lead heading into the break.

The Bobcats wasted little time extending its lead in the second half when Cone connected with senior midfielders Juan Serrano and Ruben Oropeza for a goal in the 36th minute.

A Bobcats goal off a loose ball inside the Grizzlies 18-yard box in the 48th minute made it a 4-0 game followed by Jeremy Morales scoring in the 58th minute to complete the 6-0 victory.

The Bobcats have now outscored the Grizzlies 26-0 over their last three meetings, with Aberdeen winning by identical 10-0 scores in 2022 and 2023.

Hoquiam (1-1) hopes new head coach Corri Schmid, who also coaches the Grizzlies’ girls team in the fall, can turn things around for the program.

“We kind of changed our formation for this game based on the speed of Aberdeen and I think we started out strong. One of the main things we need to do is that we need to learn how to work together and work as a team,” said Schmid, whose team features a mix of young players that includes foreign exchange students and transfers. “They’re a new team. I’m a new coach and it’s figuring out what works for them, what works for me and how we can come together and become successful.”

Hoquiam plays a non-league game against Rochester at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Rochester.

Aberdeen had a 2A Evergreen Conference matchup against W.F. West at 7 p.m. Friday in Chehalis.

PREP BASEBALL

Aberdeen 7, Franklin 6

Aberdeen rallied not once, but twice to defeat Franklin 7-6 in the Bobcats’ season-opener on Monday at the Regional Athletic Complex in Lacey.

The Bobcats (1-0) rode a lock-down pitching performance from senior starter Hunter Eisele through the first four innings of the game.

Aberdeen took an early 1-0 lead when Bubba Jones reached on a leadoff walk and came around to score on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning.

That was plenty of run support for Eisele as the right-hander was perfect, striking out every batter he faced and finished with 60 pitches – 42 for strikes – in four innings of work.

But Aberdeen’s bullpen imploded in the top of the fifth, allowing five runs on a single, five walks, two passed balls and two wild pitches.

The Bobcats rallied for a pair of two-out runs in the sixth as Chad Fretts scored on a wild pitch followed by Donovaan Hedgepeth crossing the plate on a Charlie Ancich RBI single.

Down 5-3 with two outs and none one in the bottom of the seventh, Aidan Baker doubled and came in to score on an Eisele base hit.

Fretts then walked, bringing Baylor Ainsworth to the dish. The Bobcats first baseman lined a single to right field, scoring Eisele to tie the game at 5-5.

The Quakers responded with a two-out run in the eighth on Aberdeen’s fourth wild pitch of the game to regain the lead.

Anich led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Trevon Ramos followed with a single to right, but Ancich was thrown out trying to score.

Jones then struck out, putting Aberdeen one out away from a loss.

But the Bobcats rallied once again. Schreiber doubled to score Ramos with the tying run and then came in to score when Baker singled to center, securing the Bobcats’ nail-biting 7-6 win.

Baker and Hedgepeth had two hits apiece for a Bobcats squad that had seven different players collect a base hit in the game.

Jones picked up the win, allowing an earned run on one hit with five walks and five strikeouts in 3 2-3 inning pitched.

Aberdeen pitchers allowed just two hits in the game, but gave up eight walks.

The Bobcats face Hoquiam at 5 p.m. on Thursday at Olympic Stadium, weather permitting.
