Taholah basketball teams easily win district semifinals to assure places at regionals

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Chitwhins 61, Eagles 31

CASTLE ROCK — Taholah used brilliant long-range shooting to clinch a regional berth by trouncing Three Rivers Christian in the semifinals of the District IV Class 1B Tournament on Saturday at Castle Rock.

The Chitwhins (13-8) will face the winner of Saturday night’s Naselle-Mary M. Knight game for the district championship at 5 p.m. Saturday at Montesano. Both finalists are guaranteed berths in the following week’s regionals.

Hitting four 3-point shots, Taholah’s Denise Dolan led all scorers with 28 points. She also had nine steals and four assists.

Teammate Nettie Grover was even more productive from downtown, sinking five treys. She finished with 15 points and 14 rebounds.

After owning a 22-14 halftime lead, Taholah broke it open with a 26-point third quarter. Dolan scored 13 points in that quarter, while Grover nailed a couple of threes.

“The girls were more relaxed tonight than usual,” Taholah coach Karl Braden said. “We had a good crowd come down and I think they fed off the crowd.”

Celisha Ralston grabbed 10 rebounds for the Chitwhins.

Chitwhins 80, Acorns 37

CASTLE ROCK — Terrance Jones scored 23 points as Taholah nailed down a regional berth by thumping Oakville in a District IV Class 1B semifinal on Saturday at Castle Rock.

The Chitwhins (19-2) will take on either Naselle or Columbia Adventist for the district championship at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Montesano. Both finalists are guaranteed berths in the following week’s regionals.

Taholah shot a sizzling 60 percent from the field.

“We had a lot of assists,” Taholah coach Mike Rose said. “We were getting out on the break, we were running the offense and getting the ball inside.”

Jones, who also had five steals and five rebounds, was one of four Chitwhins to score in double figures.

Brett Orozco had a fine all-around performance with 13 points, seven steals, six rebounds and four assists. Zach Cain added 12 points and 12 rebounds, while Tom Anderson had 11 points and seven assists.

As a team, the Chitwhins came up with 26 assists.

Chokers 80, Gators 67

AUBURN — Alexia Thrower recorded a double-double as Grays Harbor College rode a strong first half to beat Green River in an NWAC Western Division contest Saturday at Auburn.

Thrower, who hit 9-of-16 field-goal attempts, scored 22 points and hauled down 16 rebounds. Lake Quinault High grad Romey Begay knocked down four 3-pointers to finish with 16 points.

The Chokers (4-5, 9-12) bolted to a 41-19 halftime lead and easily withstood a second-half Gator rally.

“(We) played a great first half and surged out to a large lead through offensive ball movement and defensive effort,” GHC coach Chad Allan said. “We are still learning how to hold leads in the second half.”

Thrower and Estelle Wilson each handed out four assists. Begay, who had six rebounds, was cited for her leadership.

The Chokers return home Wednesday to face Highline.

Gators 90, Chokers 77

AUBURN — Green River College used greater depth to notch its first NWAC Western Division win at the expense of Grays Harbor College on Saturday at Auburn.

Nine Gators shared in the scoring, led by Kaelin Crane’s 23 points.

“We were undermanned, but the guys played hard,” GHC head coach Alonzo Cole said. “I found some things that will work for us. Jordan played a heck of a game and Malik was strong today.

The Chokers, in contrast, suited up only seven players for this contest. Malik Redmond scored 25 points and Jordan Phillips 22 for GHC (3-6, 7-17). John Robinson was unavailable due to the flu and Tiki Hickle and Brandon Hayes were left off the trip due to disciplinary reasons, according to Cole.

Green River owned a 54-39 rebounding advantage. Redmond and Kodi Leslie had nine boards apiece.

The Chokers return home Wednesday to face Highline.
