COLLEGE SOCCER
Centralia 1, Grays Harbor 0
Down a player for most of the second half, Grays Harbor College fell 1-0 to Centralia Community College at Tiger Stadium in Centralia on Saturday night.
Grays Harbor (0-3 NWAC West) allowed five shots on target in the first half but got out of the first 45 minutes unscathed as the game remained scoreless at the break.
Even with a full 11 players on the field in the first half, offense was hard to come by for the Chokers with only two shots registered before halftime.
Grays Harbor head coach Alan Carloza warned his team during the halftime break that teams typically look to apply pressure in the final 45 and told his team to expect the Trail Blazers (4-1 NWAC West) to be more aggressive the rest of the game.
True to his prediction, the Blazers scored the only goal of the game in the 46th minute. Joanna Pingel found some room to run and dribbled from midfield untouched and beat Chokers keeper Kristi Raffelson with a shot just inside the left post.
Following the goal, Carloza chastised his midfielders and fullbacks for conceding too much ground in what proved to be the decisive play of the game.
The Chokers didn’t allow another goal but had to play with 10 players on the field from the 60th minute onward. Grays Harbor’s Dominique Marin received her second yellow card of the match following an altercation involving Mercedes Denny and members of the Blazers.
Centralia’s Cassity Colard was also given a yellow card for her role in the fracas.
Carloza assured Marin that he was okay with the ejection under the circumstances. since it came in defense of a teammate.
The Chokers, who dressed 12 players for the match, will go into their next match with only 11 at their disposal.
For a team that has struggled to put a full lineup on the field and had to forfeit their last home match due to a lack of healthy players, Carloza said their circumstances the last half hour was familiar territory.
“It would have been nice to finish the game with 11, but it’s just an unfortunate situation. It was just a reaction. It’s an instinct to come and protect your player,” he said.
Grays Harbor will look for its first win of the year against Tacoma Community College on Saturday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen at 3 p.m.
Carloza said his team has put the rest of his team on notice with their scrappy play recently.
“These scores we’re getting right now come from girls out there battling,” he said. “We got three new girls that have never played soccer before. These teams used to come out here and think that these were easy games. We’re really battling and we’re not making it easy for anybody.”
Grays Harbor 0 0 – 0
Centralia 0 1 – 1
Top Players: Centrilia – Pingel (G, 46th minute); Grays Harbor – Raffelson (14 saves)

Adna picked up two goals in the first half and found the back of the net again in the 72nd minute on a direct kick.
Despite the loss, Ocosta head coach Mike King said he was pleaded with the way his team executed.
“The girls carried out our game plan very well,” he said. (On) the two goals in the first half we made some positioning mistakes. We’ll fix that and keep improving as the season goes on.”
