Saturday Sports Roundup: Elma girls take third in the Seaside holiday basketball tournament; South Bend girls nip Willapa Valley

SEASIDE — Playing in the third-place game, Elma flipped the scoreboard into its favor with a 28-4 third quarter to claim the win and the trophy over Astoria (Ore.) on Saturday at the Seaside Holiday Classic.

Reserve Kali Rambo, who is a varsity/junior varsity swing player, led the Eagles in scoring with 14 points. Molly Johnston added 10 points, eight rebounds and five blocks. Brooke Sutherby had nine rebounds and Peyton Elliott had 10 points, severn rebounds and three steals.

“Our defense,” Elma head coach Lisa Johnson said about the third-quarter surge. “We were working as a team, talking, communicating, doing it all.”

On Tuesday, Elma (3-4), which won two of its three games in Seaside, will travel to King’s Way Christian.

MENLO — Alex Conner and Karley Reidinger dominated underneath as South Bend edged Willapa Valley in a Pacific League game Saturday at Tenoski Gym.

The 5-foot-8 Conner scored 17 points and grabbed eight offensive rebounds, while Reidinger pulled down 21 rebounds to go with her 12 points.

Reidinger’s two free throws with 20 seconds remaining gave the Indians (3-2, 3-3) a 47-43 lead. The Vikings sank two foul shots with two-tenths of a second on the clock, but South Bend successfully inbouded to clinch the victory.

Jessica Sanchez barely missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds for South Bend.

“I thought we did a good job of not playing their (full-court, fast-paced) game,” Tribe coach Gary Wilson said. “We did a good job of staying with our game plan.

Brooke Friese scored 19 points for Willapa Valley (0-5, 1-5). Madison Huber had eight rebounds and Britney Patrick seven boards for the Vikings.

“We’ve got to shoot better and we’ve got to defend better,” Valley coach Colby Rogers said.

On Tuesday, South Bend hosts Raymond and Willapa Valley visits Ocosta.

LACEY — Cydney Flemetis led all scorers with 15 points and seven steals to lead Raymond past Northwest Christian in this Pacific 2B League contest on Saturday.

The Gulls (3-1, 4-2) led throughout, but saw their lead trimmed to four in the fourth quarter. There, Flemetis helped calm down the team and pull away for the win.

“She had a very good floor game for us tonight,” Raymond head coach Jason Koski said. “We jumped out to an 11-0 lead. Any time you do that, there are odds you’ll lose your focus. We did for a bit, but Cydney’ presence kept the game for us.”

Mikayla Collins added a double-double — 10 points and 15 rebounds — and Aubree Gardner added eight points and seven rebounds.

On Tuesday, Raymond hits the road to face rival South Bend.

AMANDA PARK — Clallam Bay blitzed Lake Quinault in the second half of this non-league contest Saturday at Amanda Park.

With Clallam Bay playing primarily reserves, the Elks trailed by only three (17-14) at the half. The Bruins, however, outscored the Elks 22-0 in the third period.

Bree Obi scored five points for Quinault (3-2). Katlynn Neeland had 10 rebounds and Christin Saavedra six boards. Quinault coach Chris Christiansen cited his team for its effort.

The Elks travel to Crescent for a makeup game on Thursday.

TUMWATER — Hoquiam and Elma survived a tough one-day tournament, with Hoquiam’s Artimus Johnson coming away with a tournament title on Saturday afternoon.

Johnson defeated Brandon Connell, of Stevenson, by pin at 1:04 to win the 182-pound title. According to HHS head coach T.J. Helland, Johnson finished the day with approximately 2 1/2 minutes of mat time.

“He ended his semifinal match in seven seconds by pin,” Helland added. “That was the fastest pin I’ve ever seen in high school. This was a tough tournament and the kids battled.”

Andre’s Vaequez took third at 138 for Hoquiam’s other placer.

Elma’s Andrew Purcell (120) and Matt Hitchner (160) finished second in their divisions, with Colton French fourth at 126 and Justin Sample third at 145.

“Matt had his best tournamentof the year and wrestled well up until the finals,” Elma assistant coach Russell Luellen said. “It was a really tough tournament this year. I thought the kids wrestled really well.”

Both Hoquiam and Elma will be at the Montesano Invitational on Thursday.

Hammerhead Girls Invitational

BREMERTON — Hoquiam’s girls wrestling team took home sixth place overall, with one bracket championship and four overall placers, at the Hammerhead Invitational on Saturday at the Kitsap County Fairgrounds.

Bianca Lopez won the 105-pound bracket title with a 6-2 decision over Skyview’s Hikaru Abe in the title match.

Elyse Goulet finished tied for third after wrestling to the five-match limit in the 125-pound division and was awarded the Chuck Ballard Memorial Grinder Award for battling from an opening round loss to finish tied for third.

Jenna Doll also took a tie for third at 155 and Mercedes Pinnell had to injury default out of the tournament and finished tied for fifth.

“This was a great tournament,” HHS girls head coach Buck Giles said. “We were able to see a lot of competition we wouldn’t normally see, a wide variety of teams that normally don’t compete over here. The girls wrestled tough, but many of them left with injuries.”

On Wednesday, Hoquiam will host its Grizzly Girls Invitational tournament.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Bulldogs 51, Seagulls JV 30

SEASIDE, Ore. — In the fifth-place game, Montesano jumped out early and finished its three-day stay at the Seaside Holiday Classic with a win over the Seaside junior varsity on Saturday morning.

Evan Bates led the team off the bench with 14 points for the Bulldogs, who woke up early to play in this 10:30 a.m. game.

“It was sloppy,” Montesano assistant coach Mike Stoddard said. “That is what happens when you play that early in the morning. We got through it.”

Bates and Shaydon Farmer were cited for their play off the bench.

On Wednesday, Montesano hosts Aberdeen.

AMANDA PARK — Clallam Bay capitalized on Lake Quinault turnovers to beat the Elks in a non-league game Saturday at Amanda Park.

“Our offense couldn’t get anything going,” Quinault coach Christian Garcia said. “They got 12 turnovers in their half-court defense and I’m pretty sure they scored on every turnover we had.”

The Elks were missing three starters due to family reasons, with a third sitting out most of the first quarter for disciplinary reasons.

David DeLaCruz topped Lake Quinault with 16 points. Anthony Ramirez grabbed 16 rebounds for the Elks (1-4).

Lake Quinault visits Joyce for a makeup game Thursday.

SALEM, Ore. — Alexia Thrower threw down a game-high 23 points and Angela Sikora added 21 points as Grays Harbor knocked off Everett in the Chemeketa Crossover Tournament on Saturday.

Shooting just over 50 percent from the field, the Chokers (5-4) never trailed. In the second half, GHC shot 57 percent from the field and pulled away with a 51-29 second half.

“We held a very good Everett team to 66 points and that was a major factor,” GHC head coach Chad Allan said. “Our defense created our offense. The full-court pressure helped us win the battle. It was a great team effort to win all four quarters for the first time this season.”

Jayln Norwood added 16 points and six rebonds for GHC.

On Sunday, GHC takes on host Chemeketa.

SPOKANE — A rough three-day weekend in Spokane came to an end on Saturday after Mount Hood rolled past Grays Harbor College in the final day of the Spokane Crossover Tournament.

Malik Redmond led the Chokers (3-8) with 23 points and 10 rebounds. GHC trailed 52-32 at the half as the Saints shot 51 percent from the field overall.

Cody Thompson led all scorers with 32 points and 16 rebounds for Mount Hood, which hit 13-for-34 behind the 3-point arc.

On Wednesday, GHC hits the road to take on Clark College.
