Saturday Sports Roundup: Raymond boys edge Hyaks in wild finish

Raymond boys win wild one from North Beach. Elma girls prevail

BOYS BASKETBALL

Gulls 54, Hyaks 53

RAYMOND — Marcus Anderson’s basket capped a 7-0 Raymond run in the final minute that netted a thrilling win over North Beach in a Pacific League contest Saturday at Raymond.

Limited to two points in the first seven minutes of the fourth quarter, the Gulls (1-1, 2-2) trailed by six with about one minute left. Taevon Hubbard’s 3-point basket cut the deficit to one with about 35 seconds remaining.

After the Gulls regained possession, Devine Souvannavanh’s shot from the corner in the waning seconds was partially blocked. Anderson, however, put in the follow shot with three seconds on the clock.

Raymond coach Mike Tully said his team was able to pressure a short-handed North Beach team in the late going. The Hyaks suited up only eight players, with two of those fouling out.

“We executed the game plan pretty well,” Tully said. “We’ve been struggling with layins and free throws and that almost came back to bite us (the Gulls were 10-of-23 from the foul line). We’ve got some things to work on, but a league win is a league win.”

Anderson finished with 20 points, nine rebounds, four assists and two blocked shots. Souvannavanh added 16 points, five assists and four steals.

Marcus Pope scored 22 points and Steven Sotomish 15 for the Hyaks (1-3, 1-4).

Both teams are in action Monday, with the Gulls hosting rival Willapa Valley and the Hyaks journeying to Life Christian.

C.C. WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Chokers 85, Panthers 66

PORTLAND — The Grays Harbor College women survived a rough road trip by beating Portland in a non-conference game Saturday.

Alexia Thrower scored 25 points and grabbed 14 rebounds as the Chokers improved to 5-1 for the season. Sandin Kidder added 16 points, Angela Sikora 15 and Estelle Wilson 10 for GHC.

Merely getting to Portland represented half the battle for the Chokers. Due to a traffic snarl in Aberdeen, the Chokers arrived only 20 minutes prior to the scheduled tipoff.

“The team never really got on track today and missed a lot of layups, but we battled and pulled away in the fourth quarter,” Choker coach Chad Allan said.

He cited Katie Brisbois, who had nine points and seven rebounds, for providing a spark.

The Chokers will host their own crossover tournament Friday through Sunday.
