Schweppe sisters lead Montesano to second straight district crown

Haley and Samantha Schweppe place 1-2, respectively, at 1A District 4 Championships in Pasco

For the Montesano girls cross country team, Thursday’s meet at the 1A District 4 Championships could be summed up by the words of late New York Yankees Hall of Fame catcher Yogi Berra.

It was déjà vu all over again.

Montesano sophomore Haley Schweppe won the district title for the second year in a row, leading the Bulldogs to their second-consecutive team district championship at the Lewis River Golf Course in Woodland.

Schweppe navigated the wet and muddy course in a time of 18:53 to place first, followed by older sister Samantha in second with a time of 19:32 over the 5K race.

Sophomore Zoe Ray (20:26, 7th), freshman Aiden “Phoebe” Bowe (21:23, 10th) and junior Anna O’Conner rounded out Monte’s district-championship score of 49, the only team to break 50 in the meet and well ahead of second-place Seton Catholic (91 points).

The boys race looked very similar to the 1A Evergreen League Championships last week in Elma as the top four runners claimed the top spots in the district final.

Rochester’s Gunnar Morgan, who placed second to Elma’s Frank Roberts in last week’s league meet, took first with a time of 16:19.

Roberts placed second with a time of 16:27, edging Montesano junior Benjamin Anderson (16:28, 3rd) and Hoquiam sophomore Ryker Maxfield (16:29, 4th).

The top three Harbor runners were separated by a mere three seconds.

Montesano junior Colton Sweet placed 12th with a time of 17:31.
