Eagles 6, Rockets 0
ELMA — Elma’s passing game allowed it to control the pace of the match and the frequency of shots on goal en route to a non-league win over Castle Rock at Davis Field on Thursday.
Destry Dineen finished with two goals in the second half for the Eagles (3-2), with Brooke Sutherby and Peyton Elliott scoring unassisted goals in the first 18 minutes of the match.
Alicia Hook and Jayla Mason each scored in the second half, with Kassedy Olson getting assists on goals from Hook and Dineen.
“Our passing practice is paying off,” Elma head coach Scott Rockey said. “LaCenter was very fast when we faced them (earlier in the week). Sometimes, when you play faster to match a fast team, it carries over. We were still playing fast today and it helped us tremendously.”
On Saturday, Elma hosts Charles Wright.
Bulldogs 1, Knights 1
MONTESANO — Each team controlled one half as Montesano and King’s Way Christian played to a tie in a non-league match at Jack Rottle Field on Thursday.
Montesano (2-1-2) got on the board first in the 45th minute when Glory Grubb beat two defenders for a 1-one-1 with the goalkeeper. Grubb took a quick touch past the goalie and rolled a shot in to make it 1-0.
It looked as though the Bulldogs would earn a victory until the 77th minute. King’s Way sent a ball rolling through to Montesano keeper Haylee Perkinson, but as Perkinson tried to dive on the ball it squirted free and the Knights were able to put home a shot to tie the match 1-1.
“(King’s Way) had a little bit more possession in the second half, but we forced them to shoot out wide and they weren’t getting on target,” Monte coach Mike Malpass said. “In the first half we had more possession and had lots of shots on target, but not many good scoring chances.”
Malpass cited defenders Katie Granstrom and Morgan Kersker for their performances.
Montesano hosts Centralia on Tuesday.
Hilanders 4, Bobcats 3
KELSO — A late goal enabled Kelso to fend off Aberdeen in a non-league contest Thursday at Kelso.
The Bobcats (1-3) forged a 3-3 tie midway through the second half when Tayler Housden cleaned up a loose ball off a Kyra Gallinger outside shot.
The Hilanders, however, connected on a long shot during stoppage time for the game-winning marker.
Kelso never trailed but also never led by more than a goal. After the Hilanders snapped a 1-1 standoff early in the second half, Housden retaliated on a run off the ensuing kickoff.
Abbie Bradt scored the opening goal for Aberdeen.
Bobcat coach Ryan Housden credited the entire team for its finest performance of the young season.
“Our defense was solid. Our attackers were making connections on top,” Coach Housden said. “On defense, we were pressuring the ball a lot better than in games past. I was proud of them.”
The Bobcats open Evergreen 2A Conference play Thursday at home against Centralia, then entertain Hoquiam at noon on Saturday.
Cougars 3, Grizzlies 2
Hoquiam matched two Seton Catholic goals, but couldn’t come up with a third to lose a non-league soccer match at Olympic Stadium on Thursday.
The Grizzlies answered Cougar goals in the 14th and 44th minute with scores just moments later, but it was a marker in the 36th minute that would prove to be the game-winner for Seton Catholic.
“We were pressing and we dominated possession in the second half, we just couldn’t get shots off,” Hoquiam coach Drew Grannemann said. “We played a much more consistent game tonight. We never let being down get to us and we just used their momentum to propel us toward their goal. It was just a lot of effort put out and it was promising to see for a non-league game.”
Seton Catholic broke a scoreless tie 14 minutes into the game when the Grizzlies’ defense couldn’t clear fast enough and the Cougars sent a shot home from 12 yards out. However, Hoquiam answered right back in less than a minute. Maya Jump sent a through ball shortly after the ensuing kickoff and Emma Skinner ran on to take two touches and beat the goalkeeper from 12 yards out to tie the match 1-1.
In the 36th minute, Seton Catholic tapped in a shot from six yards out to take a 2-1 lead into halftime. The Cougars added the game-winning goal in the 44th minute on a rebound.
Hoquiam answered the score three minutes later when Judy Renteria sent a perfect through ball ahead to Skinner, who beat the Seton Catholic goalkeeper to cut the lead to one, but that was as close as the Grizzlies would get.
Grannemann cited Alexis Wonderly and Renteria for controlling play in the midfield.
Hoquiam travels to Vancouver to face King’s Way Christian on Tuesday.
Eagles 6, Wildcats 0
WESTPORT — Life Christian Academy’s speed and ball control made life difficult for Ocosta in this Central 2B League match on Thursday afternoon.
The Eagles led 3-0 at the half and outshot the Wildcats, 40-2, on the day. Goalkeeper Kristi Raffelson finished with 17 saves for Ocosta.
“Life Christian had too much speed, good dribbles and good passers,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said. “They were more aggressive to the ball than we were.”
King noted that sophomore defender Piper Furford will be out of action for the next four weeks with a lacerated spleen suffered in a match earlier this week.
“(The team) didn’t adjust well to the loss of Piper on defense,” King added.
On Tuesday, Ocosta (0-2, 2-2) will host Onalaska.
