Sounders steal point in dramatic comeback

SEATTLE — As Seattle entered the 75th minute on Saturday night at CenturyLink Field, they found themselves down 3-0 having hit the crossbar twice as well as the post. Still, they would not be denied.

Goals from Nicolas Lodeiro, Will Bruin and Osvaldo Alonso saw the Sounders extend their home unbeaten streak to 11 regular season matches in a wild 3-3 draw, the first time Seattle Sounders FC have come from three goals down to earn a point in the MLS era.

Everything that could go wrong in the first half did for Seattle as Juan Agudelo scored with Daigo Kobyashi adding the other for the visitors, who looked to be headed for an impressive road rout up 2-0 at the break.

The New England Revolution bagged the opener in the 15th minute after Frei mishandled a distance shot by Kobayashi that deflected off the Sounders ‘keeper and trickled into the net, affording the visitors the early advantage.

That lead would then double 11 minutes later on a cross from New England’s Kelyn Rowe that Agudelo headed into the net, putting the Sounders in the 2-0 hole heading into halftime, despite hogging 75 percent of the possession and mustering 13 shots.

Alonso very nearly pulled one back for Seattle just after second half kickoff off a left-footed volley attempt that he put past New England goalkeeper Cody Cropper. But the shot would defect off the crossbar to preserve the two-goal deficit. The unfortunate break would come back to haunt Seattle, as the Revs would pounce for a third goal in the 54th minute as Agudelo would add his second of the day off a feed from Diego Fagundez to push the lead to 3-0.

Lodeiro started the comeback in the 75th minute with a finish off a cross from Joevin Jones, the third goal of the season for the Uruguyan.

Bruin then added the second with a headed finish 10 minutes later to pull the Sounders within 3-2. The tally set up Alonso for the miracle equalizer, which the Cuban midfielder headed home off a cross Lodeiro, sending the CenturyLink crowd into a frenzy and allowing the Sounders to escape the contest with the draw.
