State 2B/1B Roundup: Raymond girls, Taholah boys bow out at Spokane

State 2B Girls

Cougars 61, Gulls 54

SPOKANE — Mikayla Collins came up with one of her best games of her career on Wednesday, scoring 27 points and pulling down 23 rebounds for Raymond before White Swan took flight in the second half to win this state 2B girls basketball loser-out opening round game at Spokane Arena.

Raymond’s season comes to an end at 21-7.

“We battled hard on the boards, but we had too many turnovers; you can’t do that in a state game,” Raymond head coach Jason Koski said. “Mikayla was a stud tonight. She was a machine. We had 24 points at halftime and she had 16 points and 10 rebounds.”

White Swan took off with a 15-4 lead in the first quarter before Raymond settled back down after a series of timeouts to close to 18-14 at the end of the quarter. The Cougars would extend their lead a couple of times, but the Gulls clawed back.

Down by four with 1:15 left, White Swan led 57-53 and Raymond called timeout. However, the Gulls turned the ball over after the timeout and couldn’t get closer.

“At this level, you have to be locked in at every possession,” Koski added. “After three, we were down by eight. I felt pretty good about it, because we felt good on defense. But, (White Swan’s) Jessica Cheney is a stud. We couldn’t find her.

“In closing, this is a pretty special group, senior laden,” Koski said. “The bench was just as important as the seniors. It is a great group of kids to be around every day and lots of great memories.”
