Bobcats 109, Wolves 73
LACEY — Aberdeen used its depth to survive a strong challenge from Black Hills in an Evergreen 2A Conference meet Thursday at the River Ridge High School pool.
The Wolves blunted Aberdeen’s characteristic first-place punch by winning seven of the 12 events. But the Bobcats swept the top three places in the 200-yard individual medley, 100 breaststroke and 100-yard butterfly to take command.
Aberdeen’s Anna Weber met state-qualifying standards in the 200-yard freestyle (2:04.03) and 100 fly (1:03.09). Her split times in the 200 and 400 free relays were also season bests.
Kayleia Sias and Melissa May also won individual events for the Bobcats.
Bobcat coach Jan Simons also cited the performances of Patricia Bates, Camryn Cook, Juliana Meza and diver Trudy Butcher.
The Bobcats (3-0 in league) travel to Timberline on Tuesday.

VOLLEYBALL
Gulls win in three
MENLO — Karlee Freeman served four aces and put down 17 kills as Raymond opened Pacific League play by thumping Willapa Valley, 25-11, 25-18, 25-13, on Thursday at Tenoski Gym.
Raymond’s Sadie Warnstadt served 10 consecutive points in the third set.
“We served incredibly tough,” Raymond coach Bob Swogger said. “We got them in trouble on serve-receive and we kept them out of their offense. It was just a good all-around effort from us. We made (few) mistakes tonight.”
Willapa Valley coach Lori Snodgrass was considerably less pleased.
“We didn’t even show up tonight,” she said. “Raymond served well tonight and we didn’t play well at all.”
The Vikings won the JV match, 25-20, 25-21.
Life Christian Academy will be the next opponent for both teams next week. Willapa Valley (0-1, 4-3) travels to Life Christian on Tuesday. On Wednesday, Raymond (1-0, 6-1) hosts Life Christian.
Bulldogs win in five
MONTESANO — Rallying in the final two sets, Montesano outlasted Tenino, 25-13, 22-25, 22-25, 25-14, 15-8, in an Evergreen 1A League match Thursday at Bo Griffith Memorial Gym.
This was Cancer Awareness night at Montesano. Some $1,550 was raised to benefit Montesano High counselor Tami Herzog, who has been diagnosed with cancer.
McKenna Miller led Bulldog hitters with 13 kills. Emma Jensen had seven kills and Mylaina Parker six for Montesano (1-1, 4-4).
Monte setter Janessa Otterstetter contributed 36 assists, while Hannah Hatcher had 24 digs.
“They’ve been working on mental toughness,” Monte coach Renee Volz said. “They came together as a team and really pushed through.”
The Bulldogs won the JV match, 22-25, 25-17, 15-10. Tenino took the C squad contest, 16-25, 25-19, 15-10.
Montesano travels to Hoquiam on Tuesday.
Grizzlies in four
FORKS — Karlie Krohn contributed 18 kills and 11 digs as Hoquiam downed Forks, 25-16, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22, in an Evergreen 1A League opener Thursday at Forks.
Kamimi Papp also displayed versatility for the Grizzlies (1-0, 4-4) with 14 kills and 17 digs. ReyLynn Dunn brought up 21 digs and Kacey Pelan had 24 assists for Hoquiam.
Grizzly coach Heather Bozich was generally pleased with her team’s showing.
“There were a couple of letdowns with communication, but we picked it back up and finished strong,” Bozich said.
Hoquiam won the JV match in two sets and lost the C squad contest in three.
The Grizzlies entertain Montesano on Tuesday.
Wildcats win in three
WESTPORT — Layne Martin’s 17 kills and 14 assists and Kaylee Barnum’s 18 kills helped Ocosta (1-0, 6-1) blow past North Beach, 25-12, 25-13, 25-8, in a Pacific League opener Thursday at Westport.
“We passed well, which of course means we can get the sets in,” said Ocosta coach Barbara Rasmus. “We had a lot of kills tonight.”
Erika Snider was cited for her play in having 15 assists, six kills, six digs and five aces. Emily Snider was 21 for 21 serving, including five aces. Evalyn Marsh was cited for her passing.
Ocosta’s JV team won both games, 25-17 and 25-16, as did its C team, 25-13 and 25-13.
The Wildcats (1-0, 6-1) travel to Ilwaco on Tuesday. North Beach (0-1, 0-6) hosts Chief Leschi the same night.
Bobcats fall in three
CHEHALIS — Scoring heavily with jump-serves, Chehalis beat Aberdeen, 25-20, 25-11, 25-12, in an Evergreen 2A Conference match Thursday at Chehalis.
The Bobcats began well, leading 12-8 in the opening set before Chehalis went on a 6-1 run to close out the set. It was all downhill from there for Aberdeen (0-2, 0-6).
“The girls started off confident, we were moving really well and most of our kills came in the first game,” Aberdeen coach Doug Basler said. “In the second game, our serve-receive fell apart. We just couldn’t pass.”
Aberdeen’s Bella Gill had four kills and was also commended for serving. Malynda Winston was cited for back-row defense.
The Bobcats were without starting libero Tamara Corona due to an academic conflict.
Chehalis won the JV and C squad matches, each in two sets.
The Bobcats host perennial state power Tumwater on Tuesday.
Indians fall in four
SOUTH BEND — South Bend struggled to get into rhythm in their first league game against Ilwaco, falling in four sets, 25-10, 18-25, 25-19, 26-24, on Thursday at Koplitz Fieldhouse.
Trailing to start out the fourth set, coach Tricia Needham said the Indians (0-1, 2-5) were able to battle back within striking distance of the Fishermen, but couldn’t quite close out the set.
Needham noted that Jessica Sanchez had a “great night” with 16 kills. Hannah Byington was 100 percent serving on the night.
“I think more than anything we beat ourselves through errors in the game,” Needham said. “We really just had a tough time getting going from the very beginning. “
South Bend took the JV match, 21-25, 25-15, 15-8, with Mariah Stigall and Alathia Markwell commended for all-around play. The Tribe also took the C squad match, 25-16, 25-18.
The Indians travel to Northwest Christian on Tuesday.
Elks win in three
AMANDA PARK — Kayleen Spigler served seven aces as Lake Quinault routed Oakville, 25-7, 25-18, 25-7, in a Coastal 1B League match Thursday at Amanda Park.
Christin Saavedra added three aces for the Elks (2-0, 5-1).
“All our servers were on,” Quinault coach Sue Kalama noted.
The Elks host Taholah in another league match Tuesday.

Bulldogs 3, Beavers 2
MONTESANO — Brooke Streeter’s two goals helped Montesano overcome a rare deficit to beat undefeated Tenino while playing at home on Thursday night.
Tenino put up the only goal of the first half in the 27th minute when a miscommunication between Montesano’s defenders and goalkeeper. Montesano coach Fidel Sanchez called it “an uncharacteristic mistake.”
“We have not been down all year for more than 30 seconds,” he said. “The early goal was uncharacteristic for us. Our team found the character to believe and come together to come back and win this game, I’m proud of them for that.”
The Bulldogs bounced back in the second half when Zoee Lisherness eluded defenders and shot the ball into the opposite side of the net for a goal.
Streeter took Montesano (2-0, 7-1-1) the rest of the way when she managed to lose defenders before putting the ball into the far side of the net for a 52nd minute goal.
Streeter scored again in the 62nd minute when she capitalized on a pass through the middle from Samantha Stanfield for the winning goal.
Sanchez noted the play of Sophie Barre, who came in as a substitute. Barre and Streeter were named the players of the match.
Montesano’s JV team defeated Toledo, 2-0.
Grizzlies 7, Spartans 0
FORKS — Sadie Carlyle and Abbi Spradlin scored two goals apiece as Hoquiam routed undermanned Forks in an Evergreen 1A League opener Thursday at Forks.
The Grizzlies (1-0, 2-4-1) agreed to play a nine-on-nine game against the Spartans, who are dealing with roster shortages. They dominated play throughout.
“We were able to possess the ball and we had some good passing combinations,” Grizzly coach Drew Grannemann said. “Overall, it was a good way to open league.”
Carlyle collected her two goals in the fifth and sixth minutes, off assists from Maya Jump and Taylor Strom. Spradlin’s goals came at the end of the first half and with two minutes remaining in the contest.
Jump, Strom and Tauni Hilliard also scored for Hoquiam. Strom finished with two assists and Hilliard and Brooke Bogdanovich one apiece.
Hoquiam freshman Madison Herrera was cited for strong play up front.
The Grizzlies host Aberdeen in a non-leaguer Saturday.
Bearcats 1 (2), Bobcats 1 (1)
Chehalis converted its final kick of a shootout to edge Aberdeen in an Evergreen 2A Conference match Thursday at Stewart Field.
The Bobcats and Bearcats were knotted at 1-1 following regulation play and overtime. Bailey Green was the lone Bobcat to find the net in the shootout, in which Aberdeen goalkeeper Reagan Glanz made one save.
Both teams had more scoring opportunities than the score indicated. Chehalis scored first, in the 50th minute.
Aberdeen answered with about 10 minutes remaining when freshman midfielder Brooklyn Lecomte took a long through pass from Anna Foss, beat the final defender and scored from six yards out.
“It was a great effort by our girls,” Bobcat coach Larry Fleming said. “They were down a goal and they didn’t hang their heads. They just kept working and it paid off. We had an excellent chance to win and almost pulled it off.”
Glanz, defenders Nayeli Morris, Amiah Leach, freshman stopper Elizabeth Martinez, Foss and Adrianna Vasquez were cited by Fleming for fine outings.
Chehalis took the JV match, 2-0. Nancy Tobar and Savannah Hendricks were praised for their performances.
The Bobcats visit Hoquiam at noon on Saturday at Olympic Stadium.
CROSS COUNTRY
Monte boys win
Montesano’s boys scored a perfect 15 points, sweeping the top five places in a nine-school meet Thursday at Hoquiam.
Bulldog freshman Martin Shuck took boys individual honors, covering the 5,000-meter course in 18:03. Teammate Braden Stowers was second in 18:12.
Led by individual winner Marissa Bailey, Forks took the top three places in the girls races.
North River produced the top Harbor finishes in the girls race. Freshman Ruby Gumaelius and sophomore Georgia Clark placed fourth and fifth, respectively.
Hoquiam coach Carly Giles cited the performances of Tanner McElliott and Maddie German, who both recorded personal bests.

Grizzlies 177, Knights 180
VANCOUVER — Tayte Witherbee provided a boost as Hoquiam edged King’s Way Christian in a Southwest Washington 1A League match Thursday at Club Green Meadows in Vancouver.
Hoquiam’s Ryan Cole shot a 43 to share medalist honors with King’s Way’s Cole Scheretz and Damon Stubbs. But it was Witherbee’s 45, from the No. 5 slot, that proved critical. His round included a birdie at the par-3 fourth hole.
“He played steady to finish strong,” HHS coach Larry Dublanko said. “We needed that score to win.”
The same two teams play Monday at Highland Golf Course.
