SEASIDE, Ore. — Holding Cottage Grove scoreless in the fourth quarter, unbeaten Elma advanced to the semifinals of the girls portion of the Seaside Holiday Classic with a victory on Thursday.
Jalyn Sackrider scored 13 points and Kayli Johnson 11 for the Eagles (7-0). Sackrider also blocked four shots.
The Eagles led virtually throughout. They owned a 39-30 advantage before pitching the fourth-quarter shutout.
Jillian Bieker came off the bench to contribute five steals and what coach Lisa Johnson described as “at least 10 tips.”
“Our bench stepped up big tonight,” Coach Johnson said.

Grizzlies 54, Rockets 42
Hoquiam dominated the glass and shot well from the field in coming away with a non-league home victory over Castle Rock on Thursday.
The Grizzlies outrebounded Castle Rock 43-18 and Hoquiam used that advantage to put up 31 more shots than its opponent.
Karlie Krohn scored 16 points and Jade Cox 12 for the Grizzlies (2-4).
Hoquiam head coach Mark Maxfield said some better free throw shooting could have helped them win by a more comfortable margin.
“It was one of those games where we never really in trouble but we didn’t really get to build on the lead either,” he said.
Rylee Vonhof led the team with 15 rebounds and Kylee Bagwell contributed seven rebounds despite battling an illness.

Powered by a 21-point performance from Eliza Bannister, talented Ilwaco trounced Raymond in a Pacific League game Thursday at Raymond.
Raymond head coach Jason Koski gave credit to Illwaco on a dominating performance.
“They a very good team and they crushed us early,” he said. “We never recovered.”
Raymond (1-3, 1-5) is scheduled to play at Northwest Christian on Saturday.

Bulldogs 55, Fishermen 37
SEASIDE, Ore. — Montesano’s boys got off to a slow start but got the offense rolling in the second quarter on their way a victory over Astoria in the opening round of the Seaside Holiday Classic.
The Bulldogs (4-0) will play in the semifinals this afternoon.
The Bulldogs seemed like they were letting the Fighting Fishermen off the hook and only scored six points in the opening quarter.
Montesano head coach Doug Galloway said he was glad to see his team play with a sense of urgency after some lethargic play to open up the contest.
“We started off slow then we got some energy going and got steals to get quick scores in the second and third quarters,” he said.
Sam Winter led the team with 17 points and also had five rebounds. Seth Dierkop was also instrumental to the rebounding effort with 10 rebounds.
