(Elma wins 4-2 on penalty kicks)
The Elma Eagles sent shock waves through the race for the 1A Evergreen League title with an upset victory over Tenino in a penalty-kick shootout.
Elma (4-2-1 overall, 1-1 1A Evergreen) and Tenino (6-2, 0-2) played to a scoreless draw after the first 80 minutes in what was a defensive-minded game with limited scoring opportunities.
The game went to a penalty-kick shootout, with Elma freshman Miley Seaberg, sophomore Aaleigha Weld, senior Janessa Sample and freshman Valerie Echeverria converting on their PKs.
Tenino missed two of its penalty kicks, giving a young Elma squad the improbable upset victory.
“It was a hard-fought match,” Elma head coach Evan Valentine said. “I was impressed by our work rate during the game and when it came to the shootout, three freshman and a sophomore were part of that group that won it.”
Senior keeper Grace Koonrad held the high-powered Beavers scoreless through regulation and overtime, with Emmie Spencer in goal for the Eagles during the shootout.
The loss was the second this week for perennial league-favorite Tenino, which lost to Montesano 1-0 on Tuesday.

Anabelle Estrada, Bethanie Henderson and Reghann Fairbairn each recorded assists for Montesano in a performance Bulldogs head coach Fidel Sanchez called a “complete game.”
“We showed up to play,” he said, noting his team passed the ball extremely well. “The girls were ready to go and dialed in and the score showed it.”

Playing in overtime for the third consecutive game, Aberdeen lost 1-0 to WF West on Thursday in Chehalis.
For the fourth game in a row, the Aberdeen defense held an opponent scoreless through 80 minutes.
A WF West goal in the second overtime turned out to be the difference as Aberdeen suffered its second straight league loss.
“We once again played solid D and won the ball aggressively, while also creating a few good shots on goal against a quality team,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “So I’m pleased with how we are giving ourselves a chance to win each match.”
Fleming noted Aili Scott, Britt Rajcich, Madi Marlow and Scotlyn Lecomte for playing great defense and Jaylynn Phimmasone and Marina Marll for their play up front.
Aberdeen moves to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the 2A Evergreen League with the loss.
