BOYS SOCCER
Grizzlies 4, Cougars 2
VANCOUVER – Grizzlies soccer got two goals each from Jose Juarez and Connor Darras in another strong offensive effort and secured a non-league at Seton Catholic on Thursday.
Hoquiam (2-0) got on the board earlier when Juarez got free and was hit with a pass in the open field and finished the one-on-one opportunity.
Hoquiam got another goal from Juarez on a similar play in the 11th minute with both early goals being assisted by Naz Mazariegos.
Darras got his goals in the 16th and 70th minutes with the tallies assisted by Mazariegos and T..J. Elledge, respectively.
“We moved the ball well and got through their defense pretty easily so that was good to see,” HHS coach Fidel Sanchez said. “We even got some junior varsity players in the game. It was good for them to get that varsity experience.”
Hoquiam will hit the road to face Castle Rock on Saturday.
Wolves 7, Bulldogs 1
MONTESANO — A short-handed Montesano squad struggled with fatigue in the second half and fell to Black Hills 7-1 at home on Thursday.
With some players out of town and unavailable for the match, the Bulldogs only dressed 12 players.
Monte’s Ben Royer tallied a goal on a free kick that he placed in the upper right-hand corner of the goal to bring the score to 2-1 in the 40th minute.
But with the Bulldogs lacking reserves, Black Hills scored five unanswered goals and buried Monte in the second half.
Monte head coach Rick Denholm said his team didn’t have the energy to keep the game close in the second half.
“They scored three goals after halftime and we looked tired,” Denholm said. “As the game went on we got tired and our touches weren’t as good. I was happy that the team continued to play all the way through the game.”
The Bulldogs face King’s Way Christian at home tonight.

South Bend meet
SOUTH BEND — South Bend’s Byington siblings combined to win six events, but Ilwaco swept team honors in a multi-school meet hosted by South Bend on Thursday.
Ilwaco’s boys, with 74 1/2 points, finished 4 1/2 ahead of runner-up Pe Ell. The Fishermen girls, with 66 points, beat second-place Willapa Valley by 15 1/2 points.
Hannah Byington swept the girls 100 and 200 meters and long and triple jumps. Her brother Ben took the boys 100 hurdles and javelin.
“Pretty good day for the Byingtons,” South Bend coach Steve Lazelle said. “Overall, we had good performances for a first meet and I thought the kids competed well.”
He also cited Logan Stamos for his victory in the long hurdles.
Willapa Valley’s Brooke Friese and Hannah Cook swept the girls hurdles, with Friese also winning the girls pole vault.
Viking coach Dave Ege also cited the performances of sisters Hallee and Emilee Layman in the throws and Olivia Betrozoff for a personal-best mark of 31-3 in the triple jump.
Ocosta’s Alivia Marsh won the girls high jump.
Wishkah coach Bob Eager gave his team fairly high marks.
“We did well for it being as early as it is and for the team being as young as it is,” Eager said. “We’re not in shape yet, but it’s a long season and we don’t want them to get tired when it matters late in the season.”
