Thursday Prep Roundup: South Bend girls rally to top Willapa Valley

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Indians 33, Vikings 30

SOUTH BEND — Scoring six unanswered points in the final 55 seconds, South Bend nipped rival Willapa Valley in a Pacific 2B League contest Thursday at Koplitz Fieldhouse.

The Indians (6-7, 8-9) trailed 30-27 when Karley Reidinger went coast-to-coast for a conventional three-point play with 55 seconds on the clock.

Jessica Sanchez’s basket, following an Alex Conner offensive rebound, gave the Tribe a 32-30 lead with 35 seconds left. Katelyn Doyle added one of two free throws with 6.5 seconds remaining to increase the margin to three.

Willapa Valley’s attempt at a tying 3-pointer rattled off the rim.

The Vikings (1-13, 4-14) scored the game’s opening 10 points, but the Indians rallied to a 14-all halftime standoff.

“That was the key, that we battled our way back in it,” South Bend coach Gary Wilson said. “Like I told the girls, we’re not playing our game, not scoring points, but we can still win the game because our defense was good.”

Sanchez scored eight of her team-high 12 points in the fourth quarter. She also had 10 rebounds. Doyle grabbed nine rebounds and Reidinger blocked three shots for South Bend.

Katie Adkins led Willapa Valley with 12 points.

Today, South Bend makes the short trip to Raymond. Willapa Valley hosts Ocosta.
