Vikings 71, Hyaks 58
OYEHUT – Willapa Valley was powered by a 25-point effort from Ryon Ashley in overtaking North Beach in a Pacific League game Thursday.
The Vikings (1-0, 2-0) played even with the North Beach (1-2, 1-3) in the first quarter but pulled away after that and capped off the night 21-point fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Viking head coach Jay Pearson was impressed by the scoring output but noted that it was defensive effort in the middle quarters that helped them separate from their opponents.
“In the first and fourth quarter we gave up too many points, but in the middle of the game we played well defensively,” he said.
Ashley had 12 rebounds along with 25 points but it was North Beach’s Steven Sotomish who led both teams with 30 points.
Both teams will take the court again Saturday with North Beach playing Raymond and Wilapa Valley taking on Illwaco at home.
