BOYS PREP BASKETBALL
Ilwaco 55, Raymond 39
Raymond sputtered early on, and Ilwaco took advantage in the Seagulls’ 55-39 loss to the Fishermen on Thursday in Ilwaco.
Ilwaco (3-1 overall, 2-0 2B Pacific) jumped out to a 23-6 first-quarter lead as the Fishermen shot 11-for-19 (57%) as a team, led by juniors Beckett Turner and Kyle Morris with 10 points apiece in the frame.
By contrast, the Seagulls (2-2, 1-1) hit just 4-of-17 (24%) shots from the field in the first period, including 0-for-6 from the 3-point line.
While Raymond’s defense played better in the second quarter — holding Ilwaco to 15 points — the Seagulls’ shooting managed to hit 4-of-11 (36%) from the field, three of which were from beyond the arc.
“Ilwaco came out hot, and we dug ourselves a big hole in the first quarter. After that our defense played much better,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “We struggled with our perimeter shooting all night and we just couldn’t connect consistently when we got good looks.”
Trailing 38-19 at the half, Raymond trimmed the deficit to 14 after outscoring the Fishermen 16-9 in the third quarter, paced by 10 points in the frame from senior Morgan Anderson.
But it proved to be futile as the Seagulls managed just six points in the final quarter to suffer their first league loss of the season.
Anderson led the Seagulls with 18 points to go along with four rebounds and three steals.
Skyler Hutson added eight points and five rebounds and Talan Yearout had four points and a team-high eight rebounds for the Seagulls.
Ilwaco was led by Turner and Morris, with 26 and 23 points, respectively, combining for 89% of the Fishermen’s points on Thursday.
“I’m proud of our effort, particularly in the second half,” Tully said. “If we can give that kind of defensive effort every night, we’ll be fine.”
Raymond will take on Chief Leschi at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Puyallup.
