Elma got off to a good start at the prestigious Seaside Holiday Classic Tournament by defeating Cottage Grove (Oregon) 59-49 on Thursday in Seaside, Oregon.

The Eagles (5-1 overall) led 29-21 at halftime and — after struggling to adjust to a defensive-scheme change by the Lions in the second half — used Oregon’s rule of no shot clock to its advantage.

“We eventually were able to use Oregon basketball against them,” Elma head coach Matt Ferrier said. “Down the stretch we became very deliberate and attacked the zone while not having to use a shot clock. Not having a shot clock is extremely different for our guys and their internal clock tells them when to usually shoot.”

Elma was led by Carter Studer, who had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.

AJ Holmes (14 points) and Cason Seaberg (13 points) also scored in double figures for Elma, which hit 25 of 52 (48%) shots as a team against the Lions (3-2).

“We knew this tournament would challenge us. Coming to Oregon, playing versus bigger schools is exactly what we needed. We will tested every day down here,” Ferrier said. “It feels great to be victorious. The boys are excited and ready to get after it again.”

Elma faces host Seaside at 8:45 p.m. Friday.

Willapa Valley 68, Three Rivers Christian 23

Willapa Valley remained undefeated with a 68-23 rout over Three Rivers Christian on Thursday in Longview.

The Vikings (4-0, 2-0 1B Columbia Valley) held the Eagles (1-4, 0-2) to a single point in the first quarter and five points in the first half en route to a 31-5 halftime lead.

Willapa Valley put the game out of reach by outscoring the Eagles 24-8 in the third quarter.

The Vikings were led by Derek Fluke (14 points, 7 rebounds), Riley Pearson (12 points) and Wil Clements (12 points, six steals).

Willapa Valley freshman Blaine King added eight points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting and 2 of 2 free throws.

The Vikings hit 29 of 60 (48%) shots, had 15 assists and committed just eight turnovers in the game.

Willapa Valley will face Ilwaco at 7 p.m. Friday at Ilwaco High School.

Ocosta 77, South Bend 40

Ocosta used a big third quarter to secure a 77-40 win over South Bend on Thursday in Westport.

The Wildcats (3-3, 2-2 2B Pacific) won their third-straight league game by outscoring South Bend (1-4, 0-3) 28-14 in the third quarter, led by Kayden Turner’s eight points in the frame.

“The combination of our press defense and hot shooting were the key factors in the quarter,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “We talked at halftime about finishing more aggressively and playing at a more free, high-paced tempo and our boys really found their rhythm in that.”

Turner led all scorers with 17 points to go along with three assists.

Kevin Agramon had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds for Ocosta.

Wildcats Xander Prigmore (13 points, 6 rebounds) and Garrison Barnum (6 points, 6 assists) also had solid games for Ocosta, which had 22 assists as a team and committed just three turnovers in the second half.

South Bend was led by Ty Reidinger with nine points.

South Bend plays at Pe Ell at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Ocosta hosts Pe Ell at 7 p.m. on Monday.

Raymond won a hard-fought 2B Pacific League contest 57-45 over Forks on Thursday in Raymond.

The Seagulls (4-3, 2-2 2B Pacific) led 27-23 at the half and 37-33 entering the final period as neither team could gain a comfortable double-digit lead in the game through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, Raymond made a late run and hit key free throws down the stretch to pull away for the victory.

“I’m proud of the grit our guys showed,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “These are the types of league games you need to win and we were able to execute when we needed to.”

Raymond was led by senior guard Morgan Anderson, who scored a game-high 26 points, including going 10 of 11 from the free-throw line.

Skyler Hutson had 16 points for Raymond while Talan Yearout added 17 rebounds for the Seagulls.

Raymond faces Montesano at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21 in Montesano.

Willapa Valley had the game well in hand after just one quarter in a 57-26 victory over Three Rivers Christian on Thursday in Longview.

Willapa Valley (5-1, 3-0 1B Columbia Valley) scored 26 points and held a 20-point lead after just one quarter of play.

The Vikings led 39-12 by halftime.

Star senior Grace Huber led Willapa Valley with 26 points on 12-of-18 (49%) shooting to go along with eight rebounds.

Freshman Rilyn Channell scored 10 points — including 3 for 7 (43%) from 3-point range — and had nine rebounds for Willapa Valley.

The Vikings shot 23 for 49 (47%) from the field and had 21 assists as a team, led by senior Brooklyn Patrick’s 13.

Willapa Valley takes on North Beach at 1 p.m. Saturday in Ocean Shores.
