UPDATE: Added information for Ocosta-North Beach volleyball game.

A beat up Hoquiam Grizzlies team was no match for 10th-ranked Elma as the Eagles won 11-0 on Thursday in Elma.

The Eagles (11-2 overall, 4-1 1A Evergreen) got six goals from sophomore forward Miley Seaberg and fellow sophomore forward Beta Valentine had a hat trick and three assists in the victory.

“We played well and controlled the ball well,” Elma head coach Evan Valentine said. “I wanted us to keep playing our game and we did that.”

Iveth Torres and Aaliegh Weld scored a goal apiece for Elma while Addison Burgher, Grace Spencer and Mia Monroe each picked up an assist in the victory.

Hoquiam (1-7-2, 0-5) has been struggling with injuries as of late, including being without its top two goal keepers in starter Jemima Perez and backup Chloey Dietrick, who is normally a starting midfielder/forward for the Grizzlies.

“We are really fighting through injuries and trying to fill different positions,” Hoquiam head coach John Johnson said. “It’s tough right now, but these girls are not giving in.”

Senior Ruby Wells was commended by Johnson for stepping into the keeper’s role and making some plays against the high-octane Eagles offense, including making a diving save on an Elma penalty kick.

“She did an awesome job,” he said. “So we may have lost to Elma tonight, but these girls walked away with high-spirited attitudes.”

Elma plays at Tenino at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Hoquiam will play at Eatonville at 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Monte keeper Riley Timmons recorded a clean sheet, needing to make just one save in the game as Montesano outshot the Beavers (4-7-1, 2-3) 15-2 in the contest.

Hoquiam 3, Elma 1

Hoquiam rallied back from down a set to remain undefeated with a 3-1 win over Elma on Thursday at Elma High School.

The Grizzlies (10-0, 5-0 1A Evergreen) fell down 1-0 after Elma (6-6, 2-3) won the first set 25-20.

Hoquiam responded by winning the next three sets 25-15, 25-20 and 25-19.

“It was not pretty at all on our part,” Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich said. “Elma played amazing and really stepped it up. They passed so well and dug up everything we threw at them. … We were not ready to play when we showed up and it really was apparent in the way we played. But I am incredibly proud of how our team fought through adversity and was able to pull out the win.”

Senior middle blocker Chloe Kennedy had a double-double with 18 kills and 12 digs while senior libero Graci Bonney-Spradlin added 22 digs for Hoquiam.

Hoquiam senior setter Ella Folkers had 34 assists, 13 digs and was 19-for-20 in service and had a scary moment after diving for a ball in the fourth set and hitting her face hard on the floor. Folkers had to temporarily leave the game with a bloody nose but was able to return and finish the game.

“We found a way to win against a great Elma team and I couldn’t be prouder of them,” Bozich said. “They really are fighters and are learning how to compete at a high and consistent level.”

Elma was led by senior middle blocker Torrey Thompson (16 kills), sophomore setter Aubrey Morre (9 kills, 13 assists, 22 digs) and freshman setter Allyson Warren (29 digs).

“We came out with lots of energy and played great tonight, overall,” Elma head coach Kendra Dunn said. “Hoquiam served well and was able to put together a few runs at the end of the games. I’m excited for the girls to bring that energy for this weekend’s tournament and the remainder of the season.”

Elma will play at the Mark Morris Tournament on Saturday.

Hoquiam will compete at a tournament in Adna, also on Saturday.
