PREP VOLLEYBALL

Montesano 3, Hoquiam 1

Montesano setter Myah Gallinger didn’t have any trouble performing when she stepped into he starting role.

Gallinger stepped in for Janessa Otterstetter, who was out with an illness, and had 33 assists in Monte’s 3-1 win over Hoquiam on Thursday night in Montesano.

Montesano (5-6, 2-3 Evergreen 1A) won the match 18-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-15 and 25-21 after getting off to a slow start in the first set.

Monte head coach Renee Volz said she enjoyed watching her team work together as a unit.

“Our passing was on point tonight and we had very few errors as a team. It really showed on the court that they worked as a team,” she said “They were very well focused tonight and they didn’t let down at all.”

Hoqiuam (5-6, 2-3) had trouble communicating on defense, something that Grizzlies head coach Heather Bozich said will have to improve going forward.

“We are understanding how critical communication is. That was basically our biggest problem,” she said. “Once our communication started failing we fell apart, so we have to get our nose back to the grindstone.”

Both teams have Elma next on their schedule. Hoquiam will play at home against the Eagles on Tuesday and Montesano will hit the road to play Elma on Thursday. Both games schduled to start at 7 p.m.

Elma 3, Tenino 0

The Eagles remained undefeated in 1A Evergreen-league play with a straight-set victory over Tenino on Thursday in Elma.

Junior middle blocker, Jalyn Sackrider, was again a dominant prescense at the net for Elma. The 6-foot-2 dynamo led the Eagles with 15 kills in a 25-15, 25-12 and 25-18 win.

Quin Mikel added nine kills, Ella Moore had a game-high 20 assists and Ana Perez added a game-best 19 digs for the Eagles (7-4, 5-0 Evergreen 1A).

“The girls played really well,” Elma head coach Kendra Henry said. “They stayed positive and consistent the whole time.”

Elma, which is riding a five-game winning streak, and has dominated the league during that time. The Eagles have surrendered a paltry two sets during its recent run of wins, both of those coming in a 3-2 win over Montesano on Oct. 2.

The Eagles face Hoquiam at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Hoquiam High School.

Ocosta 3, North Beach 0

The Wildcats ran their record to 10-0 on the season and remain a game up on South Bend for the league lead after a straight-set win over North Beach on Thursday at Ocosta High School.

It was the usual suspects for the Wildcats (10-0, 5-0 Pacific 2B) on Thursday, with junior setter Emily Snider (14 assists) passing to Layne Martin (7 kills), Kylee Poirier (6 kills) and Kaylee Barnum (6 kills, 5 aces) in a balanced Ocosta attack.

Evalyn Marsh had 11 digs to help Ocosta cruise to a 25-14, 25-7 and 25-15 victory.

Though they have been perfect thus far on the season, Ocosta has little room to breathe as they are in a heated battle with South Bend in the race for a league title. While the Wildcats defeated the Indians in their only league match of the season on Sept. 27, South Bend remains one game back of Ocosta in the league standings.

The Wildcats face Raymond at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Raymond High School.

North Beach (4-6, 1-4) hosts South Bend at 7 p.m. on Friday.

South Bend 3, Ilwaco 0

The South Bend Indians kept pace in a hotly-contested 2B Pacific league race with a straight-set victory over the Ilwaco Fisherman on Thursday in Ilwaco.

The Indians (7-3, 4-1 Pacific 2B) were led by senior Jessica Sanchez, who had a game-high 17 kills and was a perfect 15-for-15 in service.

In fact, South Bend was solid at the backline, sporting a 94-percent service rate as a team. In addition to Sanchez being perfect on serves, teammates Hannah Byington and Riley Hampton also achieved that feat.

“We got the win and brought the ‘County Seat’ back to South Bend,” Indians head coach Kelsey Staats said. “All of our hitters were aggressive at the net tonight.”

Aberdeen 3, Centralia 2

The Aberdeen Bobcats swept the season-series against their 2A Evergreen league rival with a five-set victory over Centralia on Thursday at Aberdeen High School.

After swapping the first three sets by identical 25-22 scores, Aberdeen (4-7, 2-4) found itself down 2-1 heading into the fourth set. But the Bobcats found their groove and took the final two sets by scores of 25-17 and 15-11 to snap a three-game losing streak.

“It was really back-and-forth until game four, where we got into a good rhythm,” Aberdeen head coach Doug Blaser said.

Bobcats junior middle blocker Kennedy Pruett had a streak of six kills on seven attempts in the middle sets in a performance Blaser said “really took over the match.”

Pruett finished the match with 17 kills, including the final two points in game five to put the Tigers away.

Hailee Baretich had nine kills and Malynda Winston added seven kills for Aberdeen, which takes on WF West at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Chehalis.

Lake Quinault 3, Taholah 1

It took a little time for the Elks to get into the game in Thursday’s contest against the Chitwhins, but after some verbal motivation from their head coach, Lake Quinault cruised to win three straight sets in a 3-1 victory at Taholah High School.

“We struggled with our passing tonight and came into the game cold,” Elks head coach Sue Kalama said, noting Lake Quinault dropping the first set, 25-13. “I asked them, ‘Are you guys ready to play now because you’re scaring me?’”

The Elks (5-2 overall, Coastal 1B) went on to win the next three sets, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-20.

“I’m proud of the girls and the way they stepped up,” Kalama said.

Lake Quinault was led by Kiya Kalama’s 12 kills and 24 successful serves.

They’ll be one of the teams in attendance at the ‘Dig Pink’ Tournament beginning on Saturday at Wishkah Valley High School.

PREP SOCCER

Tenino 4, Elma 3 (Tenino wins shootout, 4-1)

As far as losses go, this one stings quite a bit.

Entering Thursday’s game against the Tenino Beavers, the Elma Eagles were tied with Montesano in a tightly-packed 1A Evergreen league race.

But that all changed after the Eagles suffered a gut-wrenching 4-3 loss to Tenino after falling in the penalty-shootout, 4-1, at Elma High School.

Tenino scored just over a minute into the game to take a 1-0 lead, but Elma senior Brooke Sutherby tied the game with a goal in the 20th minute.

The game remained 1-1 after the half until Eagles co-captain Molly Johnston scored in the 44th minute to give Elma a 2-1 advantage.

But the Beavers (9-3, 3-2) responded with two goals in quick succession, in the 51st and 54th minute, to go up 3-2.

In the final minute of the game, Elma’s Kayli Johnson capitalized on a ball that was pinballed around the Tenino penalty area and, as Eagles head coach Scott Rockey described it, “body drove it through” the Beavers goal line to tie the game at 3-3.

The game went to a penalty kick shootout, where Tenino dominated, winning by a 4-1 margin.

“The girls played their hearts out,” Rockey said of his team after the tough loss. “We were slinging balls at the net, but had a tough time finding the frame.”

Elma (10-2-1, 3-2) outshot Tenino, 16-5.

Brieanna Dell had a hat trick to lead Tenino. Two of Dell’s goals came off assists from Courtney Dodge.

Elma faces Hoquiam at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium.

Hoquiam appeared to have grabbed the momentum with a tying goal from Tuani Hilliard in the 74th minute, but Montesano responded with two late goals to grab a 3-1 victory at Jack Rottle Field on Thursday.

“It shows character that we got tied late in the game and we responded with two more goals,” said Monte head coach Fidel Sanchez. “I was pleased with the way responded from that goal. That’s what we were looking for.”

Lexi Lovell broke the tie a few minutes later when a Hoquiam turnover gave her the ball outside the 18-yard box. A high-arching shot that went over the outstretched arms of Hoquiam keeper Jade Cox and gave Monte the 2-1 lead.

Montesano’s Marta Bosch added an insurance goal on a free kick just before stoppage time to put the game out of reach at 3-1.

Hoquiam head coach Drew Grannemann was disappointed with the loss but said the game-tying goal is representative of how he wants his team to play.

“We take those shots and we know that the keepers at this level aren’t always going to be able to secure it,” he said. “That’s something that we’re always trying to preach and tonight they did it.”

The win keeps Montesano atop the league standings with a 1A Evergreen record of 3-1 while Hoquiam falls to 2-2.

Monte will take on Elma next Thursday at 7 p.m. and Sanchez said he wants to take advantage of the week between games to fine tune some things.

“We stayed focused on the result we wanted tonight but we’ll get back to work at practice because we have to get better before our next league game,” he said.

Aberdeen 3, Centralia 2, (Aberdeen wins shootout, 3-2)

Some clutch performances in a penalty-kick shootout gave Aberdeen the edge in a dramatic 3-2 victory over Centralia on Thursday at Tiger Stadium.

Emma Green, Brooklyn Lecomte, and Nayeli Morris all converted on their shootout attempts and Char Guitierrez came up with a big save to help secure the win.

The game was even throughout regulation and overtime with both teams puting 11 shots on frame.

Aberdeen (4-7, 2-4 Evergreen 2A) broke the seal on the game with a goal in 23rd minute when Green was fouled in the box and nailed her PK.

Centralia (2-10, 1-5) responded with two goals in the final 10 minutes of the first half to put the Tigers up 2-1 heading into halftime.

The Bobcats generated chances but didn’t convert until the 78th minute, when Logan Glanz corralled a loose ball in the box and scored the game-tying goal.

Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said his team needs to do a better job possessing the ball, but was thankful for the win.

“Except for some problems with ball control in the second half, we played a good game and got a crucial win,” he said.

PREP GOLF

Hoquiam 173, Seton Catholic 186, La Center 187

Hoquiam clinched the league title with a win in a three-way match at Tri Mountain Golf Course on Thursday.

Josh Burgher’s score of 39 led the way on the par-37 course with Brayden Dayton a few strokes behind with a 42. Noah Sudderth ended the day with a 45 and Micheal Jump rounded out the scoring for the Grizzlies by shooting a 47.

Unlike a lot of the courses the Grizzlies normally compete on, Tri Mountain had some unforgiving water hazards that posed a threat to every golfer on the course.

Hoquiam head coach Larry Dublanko was particularly impressed with Sudderth’s score.

“I was very, very pleased with Sudderth’s round on a course that had enough trouble to make a round painful, but he avoided all that,” he said.

Hoquiam will now set its sights on postseason play at the district meet on Oct. 18 (time and location to be determined).

Dublanko is hoping for a repeat of last season’s result.

“We won districts three times in a row so, it would be great to do that a fourth time and get as many players as we can to the second round of districts,” he said.

Hoquiam (173) — Burgher (39), Dayton (42), Sudderth(45), Jump (47)

Seon Catholic (186) — Sean Ball (36), Nathan Lamberton (46), Cole Jackson (50), John Traffalis (54)

La Center (187) — Collin Newberry (43), Cole Entenman (47), Aaron Sundahl (47), Ethan Skinner (50)
