Pirates 62, Eagles 51
ADNA — A slow start sunk Elma’s effort against Adna in a non-league game at Adna on Thursday.
The Eagles (1-1) shot 0-for-13 from the floor in the first quarter to go down by seven points after 12 minutes of play and could never catch back up to the Pirates. Elma cut the lead to six points late in the fourth, but failed to close the gap any more.
“They just came out very physical and we didn’t make any field goals in the first quarter,” Elma coach Lisa Johnson said. “We responded in the second half to their physicality and I’m proud of how we played. There was no quit in this team.”
The Eagles were led by 15 points from Peyton Elliott and 13 points from Molly Johnston.
Elma hosts Raymond on Monday.

Six-footer Madeline Jacobson scored 22 points as the Fishermen shot 58 percent from the field. Ilwaco led 50-11 at the half.
“It was first-game jitters against what I feel is the best team in the league,” South Bend coach Gary Wilson said. “There was no way we could match up against them. They shot very well and they have good size. It was a tough way to start.”

SHELTON — Shooting 58 percent from the field, Class 3A Shelton trounced Elma in a non-league game Thursday at Shelton.
Senior guard Marshall McCullough, 9-of-10 from the field, paced the winners with 26 points. Aided by Eagle foul trouble, the Highclimbers led 43-24 at the half.
Elma coach Marvin Prince, however, wasn’t faulting his team’s effort.
“I was impressed with how they hung in there and battled,” Prince said. “If you look at our turnovers, we handled their pressure, but they shot the lights out. They were pretty tough to guard.”
Trace Thompson topped the Eagles (1-1) with 15 points and seven rebounds. Avery Brown and Sohtye Tep added 10 points each.
Prince also cited the reserve play of Levi Spalding and Isaac Horton.
