Grizzlies 4, Rockets 2
Sadie Carlyle’s three goals in six minutes helped Hoquiam get their first win of the season while playing at home against Castle Rock on Thursday.
Carlyle scored her first goal from 18 yards out off a cross from Abbi Spradlin in the 23rd minute. One minute later, Carlyle received a long pass from Jordan Cox and proceeded to dribble it half the length of the field before beating the keeper one-on-one for her second goal.
Her third goal came unassisted in the 29th minute when she stole the ball at midfield as she again beat the keeper one-on-one.
Hoquiam’s Spradlin capped off the scoring for the Grizzlies with a 6-yard goal after a shot by Maya Jump deflected off a defender. Castle Rock scored in the 31st and 71st minutes.
“We played well,” said Hoquiam coach Drew Grannemann. “We were able to finish very well. Overall it was a very positive game.”
Grannemann noted the play of Taylor Strom in controlling midfield.
Hoquiam (1-3-1) travels to Cascade Christian on Monday.
Bulldogs 7, Cougars 1
VANCOUVER — Zoee Lisherness scored the three-goal hat track as Montesano routed Seton Catholic in non-league action Thursday at Vancouver.
Lisherness opened the scoring in the 22nd minute off an assist from Brooke Streeter. The same duo also combined on a goal in the 41st minute. In between, Lisherness converted a cross from Lindsay Hutchings in the 25th minute.
Streeter, Payton Kersker, Peyton Poler and Lexi Lovell also scored for the Bulldogs (5-1), who led 4-0 at the half. Lindsey Hutchings, Anna Ayres and Samantha Stanfield were credited with assists.
The Bulldogs launched 20 shots and controlled the ball for some 56 minutes.
“We just involved a lot of players in the attack,” Monte coach Fidel Sanchez said.
Montesano’s junior varsity lost to Toledo, 2-1. Ellie Jones scored for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs challenge reigning state 1A champion Overlake on Saturday afternoon.
Tigers 2, Bobcats 1
CENTRALIA — Scoring twice in the final 22 minutes, Centralia spoiled Aberdeen’s Evergreen 2A Conference opener on Thursday night at Tiger Stadium.
The Bobcats took their first lead of the season by scoring in the sixth minute. After Abbie Bradt and Emmy Walsh blocked clearing kicks from the goalkeeper, Emma Green redirected the ball into the net.
Centralia tied it with a breakaway goal in the 58th minute and capitalized on a defensive miscue for the winning marker about 10 minutes later.
Shots on goal were 12 apiece in a physically played game.
“We played a strong game defensively and just a couple of defensive breakdowns cost us,” AHS coach Larry Fleming said. “Offensively, we are still working on being less predictable and making better touches in the attacking third.”
Bobcat goalkeeper Reagan Glanz, Elizabeth Martinez in the field and defenders Nayeli Morris, Taylor Coker and Amiah Leach were credited with strong games. Nana Vasquez and Anna Foss were cited for reserve play.
Centralia also took the JV match, 2-0. Aberdeen’s Savannah Hendricks and Logan Glanz were commended for their play.
The Bobcats (0-1, 0-3-2) face Black Hills on Tuesday at Tumwater Stadium.
VOLLEYBALL
Bulldogs win in five
VANCOUVER — Roaring back from a two-set deficit, Montesano outlasted Seton Catholic, 18-25, 20-25, 25-10, 25-16, 15-4, in a non-league match Thursday at Vancouver.
The Bulldogs (3-3) dominated the final three sets.
“We changed the lineup a little and we got motivated,” Monte coach Renee Volz explained.
McKenna Miller led Bulldog hitters with 12 kills, while Mylaina Parker and Emma Jensen added five apiece. Setter Hannah Hatcher also came up with 23 digs, while Carley Bradbury had 100 percent serving.
The Bulldogs won the JV match, 25-1, 25-16. Wishkah’s varsity beat Monte’s C squad, 25-18, 25-17, 25-19.
Montesano will open Evergreen 1A League play at rival Elma on Tuesday.
Eagles in three
CHEHALIS — Jalyn Sackrider contributed seven kills and four aces as Elma beat Class 2A Chehalis, 25-11, 25-10, in a non-league match Thursday at Chehalis.
Kenna Stoney also had seven kills, while Maddie Clark served three aces for the Eagles (5-1). Elma rebounded nicely from its Tuesday loss to 2A power Black Hills.
“We came out with a lot of energy, played consistent the whole time and played with a lot of confidence,” Eagle coach Kendra Henry said.
Chehalis won the JV match, 25-11, 25-10.
The Eagles will participate in Mark Morris’ Monarch Invitational on Saturday.
Grizzlies fall in three
CENTRALIA — Dinged with a point penalty in each set, Hoquiam lost to Class 2A Centralia, 25-17, 28-26, 25-21, in a non-league match Thursday at Centralia.
The Tigers began each set with a 1-0 lead and the serve when Hoquiam’s libero was deemed to be wearing an illegal uniform (one that contained a stripe).
Kamimi Papp had 11 kills and 10 digs, while Karlie Krohn had 10 kills and 10 digs for the Grizzlies (3-4).
Hoquiam coach Heather Bozich cited Elyse Goulet and Mercedes Pinnell for net play.
“We were a little off on our serve-receive passing, but we actually played very well (otherwise),” Bozich said. “We really played tough at the net.”
The Grizzlies draw the Evergreen 1A League bye on Tuesday before journeying to Forks on Thursday.
Gulls top Wildcats
RAYMOND — Karlee Freeman and Maddi Murray turned in outstanding all-court performances as Raymond handed Ocosta its first loss, 27-25, 25-20, 25-17, in a non-league battle of league rivals Thursday at Raymond.
Freeman finished with 17 kills, 30 digs and five aces. Murray added seven kills and 21 digs.
Raymond setter Makenna Williams also delivered six kills for the Gulls (5-1). Winning coach Bob Swogger cited the play of Tina Sypaphay, who had three kills.
“After the first set, we did a better job of passing and serving and then we started attacking the ball much better,” Swogger said.
“We didn’t hit as well as we did Tuesday (in a win over Willapa Valley),” Ocosta coach Barbara Rasmus said. “We had a fair amount of kills, but not as many as Tuesday.”
Ocosta’s Kaylee Barnum put down 20 kills, including dinks. Layne Martin had 14 kills and Erika Snider eight for the Wildcats (4-1).
Martin, Emily Snider and Lillyan Barnum each had 100 percent serving nights for Ocosta.
Ocosta won the JV match, 25-22, 25-18, and the C squad contest.
Both teams will compete in the Raymond Invitational on Saturday.
Vikings in four
MENLO — Hannah Cook’s clutch serving at the end of the first and third sets helped Willapa Valley top South Bend, 25-23, 15-25, 25-23, 26-24, in a non-league contest Thursday at Tenoski Gym.
Sidney Pollard also served well for the Vikings (4-2).
Hallee Layman delivered eight kills and five blocks for Willapa Valley. Viking libero Brooke Friese brought up eight digs, with 100 percent serving.
“I think we showed improvement tonight on hitting, which we needed to do,” Valley coach Lori Snodgrass.
South Bend’s Jessica Sanchez put down 13 kills. Katelyn Doyle was commended for an outstanding all-around performance.
“We really improved tonight,” South Bend coach Tricia Needham said. “We’re making forward progress in the development of our team. Overall, it was really a solid game for us.”
Willapa Valley also took the JV match, 25-9, 25-12.
Both teams will play in the Raymond Invitational on Saturday.
Elks win in three
AMANDA PARK – Lake Quinault swept Crescent, 25-18, 25-15, 25-11, in a non-league match Thursday at Amanda Park.
“We have a new team this year, we’re working hard and team building,” Quinault coach Sue Kalama said. “Everybody played well-rounded this match.”
“They’re a good team,” Kalama said. “It was a good match, we had some good rallies.”
Lake Quinault travels to Mary M. Knight on Tuesday.
Chitwhins in three
OYEHUT — Taholah surged in the final three sets to down North Beach, 17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 28-26, in a non-league match Thursday at North Veach.
Chitwhin standouts were not reported. North Beach’s Lauren Cox was commended for serving.
“I’m very happy with how they’ve come and their improvement,” Hyak coach Sharayah Miller said.
BOYS TENNIS
Cats lose tiebreaker
CHEHALIS — Host Chehalis prevailed on a second tiebreaker after playing to a 3-3 deadlock with Aberdeen in an Evergreen 2A Conference match Thursday at Chehalis.
The two teams also tied in sets won with seven, but Chehalis owned a bare 62-61 edge in games won.
The Bobcats (1-3, 2-3-1) received singles wins from Luis Garcia and Josh Germeaux in singles, with Germeaux celebrating his 17th birthday in the process. The newly-formed doubles team of Aaron Larson and Patric Haerle beat what coach Andy Duffy called a “good (Chehalis) team.”
Aberdeen remains on the road Friday against Timberline.

Seton Catholic wins
ELMA — Seton Catholic topped Montesano and Elma in a three-way match Thursday at Oaksridge Golf Course.
Led by Shawn Ball’s 36, the Cougars shot 170, one stroke better than the Bulldogs. Elma finished with 216 strokes.
Payson Parker led Monte with 41. Kilian Acuff topped Elma with 48.
“We have six beginners on the team,” Elma coach Rich Walker observed. “I’m proud of them. They are working hard and are much improved.”
