Monte sweeps Forks
MONTESANO — Taking full advantage of Forks’ pitchers, Montesano registered an Evergreen 1A league doubleheader sweep, 18-2 and 15-2, at Vessey Field on Thursday.
Montesano (3-0, 3-2) started the day with a 16-run first inning and never looked back. Austin Peterson and Evan Bates picked up the wins on the mound.
“We took advantage of their pitchers; I believe they were short-handed after their games against Hoquiam (on Tuesday),” Montesano head coach Mike Osgood said. “We hit the ball pretty well. Our pitchers threw strikes and we played good defense behind them.”
Osgood cited Carson Klinger for his defensive work in center field.
Today, Montesano hosts rival Elma.

TENINO — In a venue switch due to the weather, Elma was unable to stop Tenino’s offense in an Evergreen 1A League loss to Thursday.
Colten French took the loss on the mound for the Eagles (0-2, 1-4).
“I’ll take the blame for it,” Elma head coach Todd Baun said. “I didn’t have the players ready. We will be ready to play next time. Tenino flat out hit the ball. Everything they hit was hard.”
Today, Elma travels to rival Montesano.

ROCHESTER — Aberdeen brought its offense, but could only get two goals through in this Evergreen 2A Conference match against host Rochester on Thursday night.
The Bobcats’ Miguel Torres scored twice, the first off a corner kick conversion in the 30th minute. Torres sent a left-footed shot into the upper left corner for the goal.
In the second half, Torres made it 2-0 when he ran onto a long ball from Cesar Corona and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one in the 50th minute.
“All around, it was a good game,” AHS head coach Larry Fleming said. “The field conditions, which was very muddy due to all of the rain, slowed everyone down. We were able to create out chances, but didn’t do a good job of finishing them.”
Robby Lewis and Anthony Churlin were cited for their work on defense and Brandon Hulscher and David Housden were cited for their play off the bench.
Aberdeen won the JV match, 4-0. Hulizes Chavez, Enrique Quevas, Johnny Pazanno and Rigo Alavez scored for the Bobcats.
On Saturday, Aberdeen travels to Lacey to take on Timberline in a non-league match.

MONTESANO — Montesano’s Kyle Cox and Gage Iverson each had tap-in goals on rebounds off the goalkeeper to give the hosts an Evergreen 1A League win at Rottle Field on Thursday.
Cox’s goal in the 20th minute came when a shot from 18 yards out was saved, but the ball rebounded off the goalkeeper’s hands and onto his foot. Cox tapped it home for the goal.
In the 77th minute, Iverson iced the game when Cox’s cross into the box deflected to Iverson, who got an open-goal tap-in for the goal.
“We had control for quite a bit of time,” Montesano head coach Rick Denholm said. “With the 5 p.m. start and the kids being a bit tired from playing Hoquiam on Tuesday, we were just a bit slow to start today.”
Riccardo Marangon, Ken Moua and Nicolai VIkkelsoe were all cited for their all-around games.
On Tuesday, Montesano (2-1, 3-5-2) travel to Tenino.

Rainier Meet
RAINIER — With a chance to take on several district rivals, the three Northern Pacific County schools got their work in, including Raymond’s boys, at a nine-school District IV 2B meet on Thursday.
The Gulls claimed the boys meet team title by three points over Kalama, with South Bend taking fifth. Willapa Valley tied for fourth with Wahkiakum for the locals’ best finish in the girls meet.
Raymond’s depth in the boys meet showed as the Gulls won just four events — Sean Sath in the 110m hurdles, Luke Hamilton in the shot put, Jimmy Thepsoumphou in the high jump and Marcus Anderson in the triple jump.
South Bend’s A.J. Sanchez won two events — 300m intermediate hurdles and the long jump — and was a member of the winning 4x400m relay team with Preston Lawhead, Ben Byington and Seth Hall.
“That (relay) was the first we’ve run this year,” South Bend head coach Steve Lazelle said. “Overall, we competed well. There were a lot of schools, lots of competition. It was good to see some of the Central League teams; I thought we did all right.”
In the girls meet, the Vikings brought a small team, but packed a big punch to finish fourth with 47 points, an accomplishment that made head coach Dave Ege happy.
“We’re not that deep, so I’m happy about that,” Ege added. Hannah Cook won the 300 hurdles and Brooke Friese won the pole vault with a personal-best 9-0 vault for the Vikings.
Ege cited Peter Hamilton, a freshman who took third in the shot put with a PR, for his day.

YELM — Macey Wecker took medalist honors to lead Montesano to a one-point win over Yelm in a non-league girls dual meet at Tahoma Valley Golf Course in Yelm on Thursday.
Playing the Stableford Scoring System, Wecker finished with a 23 to lead the Bulldogs.
“It was another adventure at another unfamiliar course for the girls today, but they fared slightly better this time then they did at Capital on Tuesday,” Montesano head coach Lloyd Aldrich said. “We are pretty solid this year from top to bottom, but Macey really carried the team today. She has really done a terrific job of setting the table for the rest of the girls, and today they had just enough firepower to push us over the top.”
Today, Montesano returns to action at Centralia.
