VASHON ISLAND — Montesano wrestlers won two championships at Vashon Island’s Rock tournament on Thursday.
Monte’s Austin Cain outdueled Lakeside/Nine Mile Falls’ Garrett Brown in a battle of reigning state champions to take the 160-pound title. Last year’s state 1A titlist at 152 pounds, Cain scored a takedown in overtime to edge reigning state 160-pound champ Brown, 3-1.
Bulldog senior Taylor Rupe captured the 285-pound crown by pinning Quincy’s Rey Rubio in 2:56.
The Bulldogs also had two runners-up in Jacob Ellefson and Kai Olson. Ellefson dropped a 5-0 decision to Vashon Island’s Luke Larson in the 126-pound final. Zillah’s Isaac Vargas decisioned Olson, 5-1, in the 170-pound title match.
Montesano fielded only an eight-man team due to vacations and illness.
“It’s a tough tournament, so (having four finalists) is a good showing,” Monte coach Jeff Klinger observed.

YAKIMA — At the Yakima Sun Dome Invitational, a 28-10 second quarter in favor of Kennewick placed Hoquiam into a deficit it could not overcome on Thursday afternoon.
Tied at 18-18 after one quarter, Hoquiam made some defensive adjustments against Kennewick’s point guard, Saul Nieves. However, those adjustments allowed the rest of the Lions to feast on the Grizzlies’ defense — 10-of-14 shots from the field in the quarter.
“They got hot,” HHS head coach Curtis Eccles said. “Nieves had 14 of his 19 points in the first quarter, so we made some adjustments. And, it opened everything else up to the rest of the team. We got as close as 10 in the fourth quarter, so I’m proud of the guys for battling. We played a much better second half.”
Jack Adams III led Hoquiam with a double-double (21 points, 11 rebounds and six assists), with Victor James adding 15 points and Jace Varner 11 points and nine rebounds.
Hoquiam was without senior guard Jerod Steen, who was back home with a foot injury.
Today, Hoquiam (5-5) will take on Bellevue Christian on the final day of the two-day showcase.

MOUNT VERNON — A rough night on offense proved to be too much for Grays Harbor College in a loss to Everett College in the NWAC Skagit Valley Crossover tournament on Thursday.
The Trojans used a 21-14 fourth quarter to push their lead to the end against the Chokers, who hit just 38 percent from the field and only attempted 10 free throws on the night.
“We are not playing enough defense to win games at this point,” GHC head coach Chad Allan said. “Until we decide it is important we will be on the losing side of tough shooting nights. We are much better than our 5-7 record, but then again, here we are.”
Alexia Thrower led the Chokers (5-7) with a double-double — 13 points and 10 rebounds — while Romey Begay led the team in scoring with 14 points.
