SEASIDE, Ore. — Newport’s prowess behind the 3-point arc was more than enough to knock off Montesano in the opening round of the Seaside Holiday Classic on Thursday afternoon.
A slow start by Montesano (3-3), plus the Cubs’ 3-point shooting, allowed Newport to take a 27-17 halftime lead it never relinquished.
“They hit three treys on consecutive trips down the floor to give themselves the lead,” Montesano head coach Doug Galloway said. “We had a tough time keeping them in front. We had to rotate to help and that allowed them to get open for 3-point shots. They shot the ball very well from the perimeter.”
Trevor Ridgway led Monte with 12 points and Tanner Nicklas added 11 points and seven rebounds.
Today, Montesano takes on Cottage Grove (Ore.) in a consolation bracket contest.
