PE ELL — On a night when the Southwest Washington 2B Coastal League crown was on the line, the Titans became kings.
Pe Ell-Willapa Valley used a power rushing game and stingy defense to defeat Raymond 38-6 in a league contest at Pe Ell on Friday.
The Titans (5-0, 7-2) rushed for 311 yards on their way to capturing the league title with 268 yards coming from Kaelin Jurek. The senior racked up 147 yards in the first half on Senior Night and scored the Titans first three touchdowns on runs of 3, 10 and 2 yards.
Both teams will be back in action on Friday with the District IV crossover games. PWV will host the winner of the a tiebreaker between Toutle Lake, Mossyrock and Wahkiakum, while Raymond (3-2, 5-4) will travel to take on Adna.
Defensively, PWV shut Raymond down, holding the Seagulls to just three drives of eight plays or more and limited Raymond to 149 yards of total offense.
“It feels good to be league champs,” PWV coach Josh Fluke said. “We took some lumps early in the year, but the guys started coming together and they are looking good. Our defensive line started to get some good penetration. It was gap responsibility with everybody stepping up and doing their job.
Raymond showed off solid defense at times. The Gulls dug in their heels in on the first Titan drive of the game. After PWV went 13 plays to move the ball down to the Raymond 4-yard-line, the Gulls stopped the Titans for two negative rushing plays and an incomplete pass. However, Raymond couldn’t capitalize on the momentum. The Gulls fumbled the ball away two plays later and Jurek needed just three attempts to score from three yards out.
“There were a couple times early in the game where we put ourselves in a bad position,” Raymond coach Luke Abbot said. “I was happy with our one drive, showing that we can move the ball and score, but that first drive we stop them and shoot ourselves in the foot and are forced to play on our heels from that point. We tried to make some adjustments, but they are a really good football team.”
The Titan defense forced a fumble and came up with a sack on the next Raymond possession to force the Gulls back 28 yards before a Raymond punt. From there, PWV drove the ball back into the end zone in eight plays with Jurek capping the drive with a 10-yard run.
Raymond was able to answer on its next possession. The Gulls offense came alive for a 10-play drive, fueled by the running of Patrick Edwards. The sophomore toted the ball on eight of the 10 plays and scored on a second effort 1-yard run to cut the lead to PWV 16-6 with 6:19 to go in the first half.
PWV answered with its own long drive, this time a 12-play drive fueled by Jurek. The senior rushed eight times on the drive and broke through for a 2-yard touchdown run to put PWV up 24-6 at halftime.
“We were ready to go,” Jurek said. “We have five wins under our belt. We know what it feels like to win and we want to keep feeling that so we are eager to play the next game. The next game, right now that is all we are thinking about.”
The Titans forced a 3-and-out on the first Raymond drive on the second half and got excellent field position with a unique punt return. The Raymond punt hit off the back of a Gulls player and bounced into the hands of PWV’s Tyler Justice, who rushed the ball back to the Gulls 22-yard line. PWV took to the air for the next score with Matt Pearson completing a 10-yard pass to Ryan Shepherd for the score with 6:36 to go in the third quarter.
Following a Jurek interception on the Titans 4-yard line early in the fourth quarter, PWV had some late fireworks to cap a league title. Jurek broke runs of 57 and 25 yards before Justice sprinted in from 10 yards out to tally the final score.
Justice finished with 42 yards rushing in his final home contest.
Edwards racked up 83 yards on the ground while Marcus Anderson caught three passes for 34 yards and Jace Duckworth added 31 yards through the air.
