Grizzlies sweep Spartans

In an Evergreen 1A League doubleheader, Hoquiam’s Jerod Steen took matters into his own hands and feet by stealing home with the bases loaded in the bottom of the eighth inning to secure a Grizzly sweep of Forks at Olympic Stadium.

Hoquiam won 3-2 in eight innings in the nightcap, while knocking off Forks, 9-6, in the opener.

After scoring single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to force extra innings, Hoquiam loaded the bases with Steen at third base. With one out, Steen took off on the first pitch and was comfortably safe at home to score the winning run.

“It was all Jerod,” HHS head coach Steve Jump said. “He thought he could make it. He got a great jump and was clearly safe. It was all him and he deserves the credit. In hindsight, I’m glad he did it. It was gut check time for us in the second game.”

Brody Bennett and Garrett Bradley picked up the wins on the mound, with Bradley throwing five scoreless innings in relief in the second game. Bennett went five strong before Bradley closed the final two innings for the save in the opener.

Coach Jump cited Steen, Bennett, Liam Odell, Walker Dunn and Marques Rivera for their overall performances.
