King’s Way Christian 3, Montesano 0

King’s Way Christian used a three-run first inning to hand Montesano a 3-0 loss in the semifinals of the 1A District 4 Tournament on Tuesday in Montesano.

Montesano starter Trace Ridgway and King’s Way Christian pitcher Bryce Dodge put plenty of zeros up on the scoreboard, with the only runs in the game coming in the top half of the first on two doubles, a single and a walk.

And that was it as far as offense was concerned as Ridgway and Dodge dominated through the remainder of the game.

After allowing three runs on three hits and a walk in the first inning, Ridgway settled in and allowed just three hits in holding the Knights scoreless over the final three innings of the game.

The Bulldogs senior right-hander struck out eight and didn’t walk a batter after the first inning.

“That first inning was rough, they hit a few balls pretty hard,” Montesano head coach Mike Osgood said. “But that was probably the best Trace has thrown in his time here as a Bulldog. Any other day, he’d probably be on the winning side of it.”

As good as Ridgway was, Dodge was better. The Knights left-hander attacked the strike zone and kept Monte hitters off-balance, allowing no runs on just two hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks in tossing a complete-game shutout.

“(Dodge) was tough,” Osgood said. “He’s probably the best pitcher we faced all year from the left side. We’ve got to give him a lot of credit.”

Montesano’s Isaiah Pierce was the only Bulldog to get a base hit against Dodge, going 2-for-2 with a double as Montesano managed just five baserunners in the game.

Allton commended his five seniors for leading the way this season.

“These five seniors put in a lot of work together and they are a solid bunch,” he said, adding Scheuber “set the bar pretty high for the program” with his play this season, including a 69.2% strike percentage on the mound.
