Tuesday Basketball Roundup: Raymond beats Rainier to advance to district semifinals

On paper, the 2B District 4 quarterfinal matchup between the Rainier Mountaineers — ranked No. 9 in the latest Associated Press poll — and No. 4 Raymond was a matchup of two of the state’s top 10 teams.

In reality, it was never that close.

Despite an off-night on the offensive end, Raymond’s defense held the Mountaineers to less than 10 points in each of the first three quarters as the Seagulls pulled away with a 49-32 victory on Tuesday in Montesano.

With the game still close late in the first quarter, Raymond sophomore guard Kyndal Koski hit a 3-pointer that kicked off a Raymond run over the final two minutes of the frame.

Raymond senior Kyra Gardner capped the run with two 3-pointers — the second coming at the buzzer — to stake the Seagulls to a 17-8 lead after one quarter.

In the second quarter, Raymond (16-1 overall) found its footing and pulled away. The Seagulls held the Mountaineers (14-6) to just four points in the quarter and widened its lead with a 12-3 run capped Koski’s second 3-pointer of the game.

By the end of the period, Raymond held a commanding 35-12 lead.

“We had to speed the game up a little bit and get some easy buckets,” said Raymond head coach Jason Koski on how his team built a 23-point lead from late in the first quarter through the remainder of the half. “One way to do that is to rebound. The next thing is to put some good ball pressure and play good half-court defense. I think that helped a lot to get us into a rhythm.”

In the third quarter, Raymond continued to play below-par on offense, managing just 10 points in the period — seven alone from Gardner, who finished with a game high 22 points.

But Raymond held Rainier — a team adept at shooting from the perimeter — to just two field goals in the third quarter, both on 3-pointers from guard Faith Boesch and three free-throws by Bryn Beckman, to hold a 45-21 lead entering the final quarter.

“We talked the last four practices about limiting their 3-point shots and when they do shoot it, we better have a hand in their face,” Coach Koski said. “We’re an experienced team and sometimes you just have to reel them in a little bit. Our bench has come along really nicely and we have different pieces we can throw out there depending on what the other team has and what we need at that point.”

Gardner’s 22 points came on 6-of-12 (50%) shooting from the field, including 3-for-9 (33%) from 3-point range.

The Washington State commit finished with a double-double, adding 10 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals to her stat line.

Raymond freshman guard Karsyn Freeman scored 21 points — 13 in the Seagulls second-quarter surge — on 8-of-16 (50%) shooting, mostly by running the floor on the break and relentlessly and fearlessly driving to the basket.

Koski was the only other scorer for Raymond with six points on two 3-pointers.

Boesch led Rainier with 14 points for a Mountaineers team that went 4-for-19 (21%) from beyond the arc.

With the win, Raymond — currently ranked No. 1 in the latest Washington Interscholastic Activities Association’s RPI ranking — will face No. 10 Onalaska in the semifinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Kelso High School after the Loggers defeated Forks 64-43 in a quarterfinal matchup on Tuesday.

“They’ve evolved into a pretty nice team,” Coach Koski said of Onalaska. “They’ve got lots of good guards so that will be a challenge for our guards to matchup against some good quality athletes. And they run, they’re quick and we’re going to have to be able to transition on defense against them.”

Elma 40, Hoquiam 29

Elma advanced to the 2B District 4 Tournament with a 40-29 victory over Hoquiam in a play-in game on Tuesday in Aberdeen.

In a battle for the 1A Evergreen League’s fourth and final playoff spot, Hoquiam (5-13, 1-8 1A Evergreen) jumped out to an early 11-6 lead in the first quarter as senior guard Ella Folkers score six points in the period.

Trailing 17-11 at the half, Elma (3-12, 2-7) began to chip away at the Grizzlies lead. The Eagles cut the deficit to 22-19 by the end of the third quarter before taking the game over in the fourth.

Thanks to big quarters from Janessa Sample, Aaliegha Weld and Emmie Spencer — who scored eight, seven and six points in the fourth period, respectively — Elma outscored Hoquiam 20-7 over the final eight minutes to secure the victory and a spot in the district playoffs.

“The girls had a great second half,” Elma head coach Brandi Henry said. “They really stepped it up on both ends of the court. It was an overall great team effort tonight.”

Weld led Elma with 12 points for an Eagles team that shot 14-for-54 (26%) for the game, but 10-for-28 (36%) over the final 16 minutes of the game.

“Elma came out and flat outworked and outplayed us tonight,” Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan said. “Brandi continues to get her players to play aggressive and with enthusiasm. They earned the win.”

With the victory, Elma will face La Center in the district playoffs at 6 p.m. Friday at La Center High School.

Hoquiam’s season ended with the loss.

“Always tough to play in and coach your last game,” Allan said. “I want to make sure seniors Kamryn Krohn, Katie Burnett and Charli Sampson-Eastman know just how much I appreciate them and their time at Hoquiam.”

Toutle Lake 58, South Bend 30

South Bend’s season came to an end after a 58-30 2B District 4 elimination-game loss to Toutle Lake on Tuesday at Black Hills High School.

South Bend (4-13) struggled against Toutle Lake’s press defense, which forced South Bend into 38 turnovers in the game.

Toutle Lake (10-11) opened the game on a 9-1 run before South Bend’s Raydynn Morley sank a corner 3-pointer to get South Bend going.

But turnovers and foul trouble hampered South Bend, which trailed 29-14 at the half and 44-24 at the end of the third quarter.

“Never the way you want to end your season, by not playing your best,” South Bend head coach Randy Carlson said. “It was a very physical game that we could not catch up to.”

The two teams combined for 38 fouls in the contest.

South Bend shot 9-for-49 (18%) from the field.

Reece Williams (9 points, 11 rebounds) and Morley (9 pts., 9 reb.) led South Bend while Carlson cited seniors Williams, Hannah Jewell, Blakeli Jerles, Dayna Estle, Brooklynne Johnson and Katlyn Stigall for their contributions to the program.
