CHEHALIS — Riding the wave of a fast start, Aberdeen notched its first Evergreen 2A Conference victory by holding off Chehalis on Tuesday night at Chehalis.

Victor Gomez scored 22 points and Braden Castleberry-Taylor attained a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds as the Bobcats (1-1, 4-6) recorded their first league victory since returning to the 2A circuit.

Running the floor nicely, the Bobcats led 18-7 after one quarter.

“We really wanted to push tempo and our guys did an excellent job of spreading the floor early,” AHS coach Mark Buckman said. “Ben (point guard Ben Dublanko) did an excellent job of keeping his head up and finding guys downcourt.”

Dublanko scored 11 points and handed out five assists.

Down by nine after three quarters, Chehalis rallied in the final period but never came closer than the final margin.

In addition to his scoring output, Gomez was credited for his defensive work against Chehalis ace Brandon White. Buckman also cited the reserve play of Harlan Troy and Alonzo Coburn.

The Bobcats return home Thursday to face Rochester.

Led by 25 points each from Jerod Steen and Jack Adams III, the Grizzlies (3-0, 8-5) scored 27 points in the third quarter and took the lead for good in the fourth quarter. Steen scored his 1,000th career point as a Grizzly in the third quarter as he put up 16 of his 25 points in the eight-minute period, 12 of which came on 3-pointers.

Jace Varner, who finished with 21 points, added seven points in the third, while Adams caught fire to put up 11 points in the fourth quarter.

“(Forks) caught fire and were 4-for-4 from threes from four different guys in second quarter, but we were just patient and were able to defend their shooters in the second half,” Hoquiam coach Curtis Eccles said. “We just really out-shot them.”

Varner finished with 12 rebounds and seven assists to go with his 21 points, while Steen added six assists.

Orozco had six steals and Levi Jackson five for Taholah. Jones had a fine all-around game with seven rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots.

“We decided we weren’t going to press against them,” Taholah coach Mike Rose said. “We just played hard-nosed, half-court man-to-man defense.”

The Indians (1-9, 1-12) were limited to single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters.

“Northwest Christian’s defensive pressure provided a lot of miscues for us, forcing us to turn the ball over,” South Bend coach Manuel Rangel reported. “It was a pretty decent first quarter, but we couldn’t get back on track.”

South Bend’s Drew Rose had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Juan Bucio added 12 points and Jack Graves pulled down nine rebounds for the Tribe.

MENLO — Life Christian Academy showed its state-contending pedigree on Tuesday, taking host Willapa Valley out of the game early on for a Pacific 2B League win at Tenoski Gym.

The Eagles flew off with a 47-21 halftime lead and never looked back.

“They dominated every aspect of the game,” Valley head coach Jay Pearson said. “I know LCA is playing above our league right now, but I thought we would compete with them and we didn’t. They dictated to us what they were going to do and we came out timid. Now, we need to wipe it away and prepare for a rivalry game; we need to be ready for that.”

Matt Pearson led the Vikings (3-5, 7-5) with 19 points, which included Valley’s first 17 points of the game.

Today, Valley hosts Raymond.

Fishermen 57, Wildcats 36

WESTPORT — Over a seven-minute stretch that spanned the first and second quarters, Ilwaco’s half-court trapping defense smothered host Ocosta and established a lead it didn’t relinquish in this Pacific 2B League contest on Tuesday.

Ocosta and Ilwaco were locked in a low-scoring first quarter when the Fishermen casted out their 1-3-1 half-court trapping defense and caught several Wildcat turnovers. Ilwaco went on to a 36-14 halftime score and never looked back.

“We had a game plan, but we turned the ball over and it allowed them to get into transition,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “In the second half, we outplayed them, but that 7-8 minute stretch between the first and second quarters hurt us. It was our undoing.”

Zach Allton led Ocosta (3-6, 5-8) with eight points.

On Friday, Ocosta travels to Northwest Christian.

Warriors 73, Hyaks 46

OYEHUT — A slow start for North Beach and a hot-shooting start for Chief Leschi doomed the Hyaks as the Warriors rolled to victory in a Pacific 2B League contest at the House of Pain on Tuesday.

Chief Leschi’s Yahola Gower hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter to help the Warriors jump out to a 15-point lead early on and the Hyaks never recovered.

“We were not ready and they were,” North Beach coach Larry Moore said. “We just turned the ball over too much. We just have to do a better job taking care of the ball. At times we played really well, but other times we turned the ball over right under the other team’s basket.”

Tim Johnson led the Hyaks with 21 points, while Rodney Washington added seven rebounds.

Moore cited Ben Poplin for his overall performance.

The Owls led 37-0 at the half.

“We struggled from the get-go,” Wishkah coach Stefanie Baltzell said. “They pressed us and we worked on a press break. We just couldn’t get a handle on the ball once we broke their press.”

Anthony Fenton scored five points and was also cited for his defense.
