BOYS SOCCER
Bobcats 2, Wolves 0
Scoring both its goals in the final six minutes, league-leading Aberdeen reduced its magic number to one by blanking Black Hills on Tuesday night at Stewart Field
The Bobcats (7-1, 11-2) now lead Evergreen 2A Conference runners-up Black Hills and Tumwater by two games with two matches remaining. They can clinch the league crown with a win at Centralia on Thursday.
Although Aberdeen had the edge in scoring chances, the game was scoreless until the final six minutes.
Then Cesar Corona chipped a pass over the defense to teammate Miguel Torres. The senior forward outran three defenders and lofted a shot past the goalkeeper from 12 yards out.
Junior midfielder Tony Oropeza knocked in a 20-yard howitzer during stoppage time to complete the scoring. Luis Martinez assisted on the play.
Senior goalkeeper Alexis Garcia recorded his eighth shutout. His diving save on a long shot midway through the second half kept the game scoreless to that point.
“It was a smart and solid win for us and it showed that we can dominate a good team, keep up the high pressure and surrender very little ground on the defensive end,” Bobcat coach Larry Fleming noted.
In addition to Oropeza, Torres and Corona, Fleming cited the defensive play of Trevor Dawkins, Robby Lewis, Anthony Churlin and Dylan Hughes.
The junior varsity match ended in a 1-1 deadlock. Enrique Cuevas scored for the Bobcats, with Toby Courts and goalkeeper Luis Soto also cited for fine play.
GIRLS GOLF
Bobcats 193, Grizzlies 213
With three players scoring in the 40s, Aberdeen outdueled Hoquiam on Tuesday in the season’s second meeting of the Grays Harbor golf rivals.
Aberdeen’s MacKayla Waltee carded a 46 in the rain at Highland Golf Course to take medalist honors. Mari Rabung added a 47 and Emily May a 49 for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats would have scored 111 in the Stableford system, their method of scoring in the Evergreen 2A Conference.
“Having three girls in the 40s is a coach’s dream,” Bobcat coach Dan Sundstrom said. “MacKayla is playing some pretty good golf right now (and) Mari and Emily had solid rounds. The girls played awesome battling the rain and soggy conditions.”
Hoquiam coach Patty Sundstrom (Dan’s wife) was equally pleased.
“We are so proud of the girls,” she said. “We had our best team score so far.”
Bailey Smith topped the Grizzlies with a 51, while teammate Brooke Bogdanovich lowered her score significantly with a 52.
The Bobcats play their third match in as many days today at Tumwater. The Grizzlies face Montesano on Tuesday at Elma’s Oaksridge course.

Montesano’s Macey Wecker posted a 48 to earn medalist honors for the match, while Mylaina Parker and Lauren Denholm each carded a round of 51 and Glory Grubb shot a 52.
“Those are pretty good scores overall, especially considering the fairly miserable conditions the girls had to play in,” Montesano head coach Lloyd Aldrich said. “Our consistency this season has really been outstanding.”
Elma was unable to field a full team, but was led by an 85 from Morgan Rhoden.
“Even though they knew we had to forfeit the match, they went out and battled the elements,” Elma head coach Rich Walker said. “They may not see it themselves, but they are much improved.”

MATLOCK — Allen Espinoza nearly completed a perfect game, striking out 12 for a no-hit game to help Lake Quinault to a Coastal 1B League win over Mary M. Knight on Tuesday afternoon.
Espinoza got through the fourth inning when a pop fly to short left field was hauled in by Jesus Mendoza. However, the home plate umpire ruled catcher’s interference to allow the batter to first base, breaking up the perfect game.
“Allen pitched really well,” Lake Quinault head coach Keith Samplawski said. “We made three great plays during the game (to save the no-hitter).”
Samplawski cited Mendoza, an eighth grader, for his work at shortstop, as well as Murray Cottrell for his defense and Anthony DeMarco for his work behind the plate to aid Espinoza.

“It was a tough night,” Hoquiam coach Steve Jump said. “Honestly, Tenino just outplayed us. After giving them ten runs in the first inning, I was happy with our attitude that we kept fighting.”

ADNA — South Bend’s boys and Willapa Valley’s girls put in some good work in the mist and the mud on Tuesday afternoon to take second place in their respective team results at the Pirate Classic in Adna.

“I’m pretty happy; it was a pretty good day,” Willapa Valley head coach Dave Ege said. “We didn’t have enough depth to catch Adna, but we only had six girls there and they all had very good performances.”
