Aberdeen 1, Rochester 0

Aberdeen is now regional-bound after a second half goal from Emmy Walsh led the Bobcats to a 1-0 victory over Rochester on Tuesday at Stewart Field.

The decisive goal came on free kick in the 45th minute from Emma Green who got her shot over Rochester’s wall of defenders where the ball pinballed around in the box. Logan Glanz had her shot blocked by a Rochester fullback and Walsh was there to clean up the rebound and score the only goal of the match.

The Warriors were eliminated from tournament contention with the loss and saw its record fall to 2-8 in league.

“We had a perfect play from Emma Green and I just knew that if our girls crashed the net it would pay off and it did,” Walsh said.

Aberdeen’s defense took over from there as the Warriors only generated one shot on goal the rest of the match.

The Bobcats (5-10, 3-7 Evergreen 2A) had their chances as well but had some difficulty crossing the ball in the box from the wings.

Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said his team will need to do a better job controlling the ball to take their game to the next level.

“I think we’re hustling and playing hard but our touch needs to be better,” he said. “If our touch is a little better we probably dominate (Rochester). We can’t seem to score very much even when we get a lot of opportunities.”

The next challenge for Aberdeen will be at Hockinson at 7 p.m. on Saturday in the 2A District IV Tournament. Hockinson won the Greater St. Helens League with a record of 10-2.

Walsh said her team will need to come out with the same intensity against Hockinson to pull off the upset.

“This win felt good. We just have to come with the same energy we had tonight on Saturday and see where it can take us,” she said.

Montesano 5, Raymond-South Bend 0

Anna Ayres and Brooke Streeter scored a pair of goals each as Monte remained a game up on Tenino for the league lead with a shutout victory over the Raymond-South Bend Riptide on Tuesday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (13-1-1, 6-1) scored twice in the opening 10 minutes of the first half. Senior midfielder Glory Grubb rocketed a shot for a goal in the sixth minute followed by Streeter’s first goal three minutes later.

Ayres scored her first of the night in the 22nd minute to give Monte a 3-0 edge heading into halftime.

Streeter and Ayres alternated goals in the second half — Streeter’s in the 68th minute and Ayres’ second of the game in the 78th minute — to round out the scoring.

The win keeps Monte a game ahead of second-place Tenino (11-3-1, 5-2) in the race for the 1A Evergreen title. The Bulldogs face the Beavers at 7 p.m. in Thursday’s regular-season finale at Tenino High School.

If Monte wins, they’ll stake claim to the league title and the league’s No. 1 seed heading into the district tournament.

A win by Tenino means the two teams will be co-league champions and Tenino will get the No. 1 seed based on goal differential against the league’s third-place team, Elma.

Tenino 2, Hoquiam 1

Hoquiam was eliminated from postseason play with a 2-1 loss to Tenino on Tuesday at Hoquiam High School.

Hoquiam (7-7-1, 2-5) got the equalizer when Sadie Carlyle took a pass from Maya Jump and beat two defenders to score in the 16th minute of play.

Tenino scored midway through the second half and held off multiple Hoquiam attacks to secure the victory.

“The game was close and both teams had chances on goal,” said Hoquiam head coach Drew Grannemann, who praised Jade Cox, Jordan Cox, Kylee Bagwell and Jump on Senior Night. “It was a really fun match to coach and watch. We traded punches until the final whistle.”

Hoquiam closes out the season against Raymond-South Bend at noon on Saturday at Olympic Stadium.

The Aberdeen Bobcats lost a hard-fought, four-set match against the Black Hills Wolves on Tuesday in Aberdeen.

Aberdeen head coach Doug Blaser said that the Bobcats came out energized in their Senior Night game, but were unable to sustain the energy consistently throughout the match.

“We came out with a ton of energy and played really well that first game,” he said. “We let down from the energy in game two and never really got into that game. But we fought back in game three.”

Aberdeen (4-10, 2-7 Evergreen 2A) burst out the gate and took the first set, 25-20. But league-leading Black Hills (10-3, 8-1) responded to win three straight sets — 25-9, 25-19 and 25-21 — to win the match.

Hailee Baretich had four aces to lead Aberdeen.

“Black Hills is tall and athletic and plays really well so I’ve got to hand it to them,” Blaser said. “But I though our girls fought with a lot of guts tonight and didn’t leave anything out on the floor.”

Aberdeen will play at Rochester at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the regular-season finale.
