Bobcats 4, Eagles 2
ELMA — Rebounding after a slow start, Aberdeen rallied past Elma in a non-league season opener Tuesday night at Davis Field.
Abbie Bradt scored twice in the second half to snap a 2-2 deadlock.
The Bobcats (1-0) actually spotted the Eagles the game’s first two goals.
Elma drew first blood when Peyton Elliott redirected Alicia Hook’s corner kick into the net in the opening two minutes. Kassedy Olson made it 2-0 about three minutes later, off an assist from Jillian Bieker.
Aberdeen answered on its next possession. After Bradt was fouled in the box, Tayler Housden converted the penalty kick.
Kyra Gallinger’s goal off a Megan Auld pass later in the first half tied it.
Bradt took a crossing pass from Dani Buckman for the go-ahead goal early in the second half. Sandwiched by three defenders, Housden found Bradt for what proved to be an insurance marker.
Bobcat goalkeeper Reagan Glanz helped preserve the margin with a half-dozen crucial saves.
“The girls had a really good halftime talk with each other,” Bobcat coach Ryan Housden said. “Before that, they had a sense of urgency, knowing they were two goals down and they had to get going. Once they finally got their feet under them, they were communicating and they were moving the ball around.”
“A really good start, but we lost momentum at the midpoint of the first half and we couldn’t find it the rest of the game,” Elma coach Scott Rockey said.
He cited defenders Dallas Trusty and Tawni Heller for fine performances.
Both teams return to action Thursday, with Aberdeen visiting Montesano and Elma hosting Seton Catholic.
Grizzlies 5, Tigers 1
Hoquiam used good ball movement to control possession and dominate its season opener against Napavine at Olympic Stadium on Tuesday. The Grizzlies scored the first five goals of the contest to cruise to victory in the non-league soccer contest.
Hoquiam (1-0) controlled the pace of play through the first 20 minutes of the match, but didn’t score until the 22nd minute when Casey Mode fired a shot in from 10 yards out.
In the 40th minute, Emma Skinner made a run up the right side of the field and got the ball just outside the box. Skinner made one touch and kicked the ball home.
Maya Jump took a pass from Alexis Wonderly in the 57th minute and blasted a shot into the net from 25 yards out.
Skinner added another goal in the 62nd minute before Judy Renteria beat the Napavine goalkeeper one-on-one to cap the Grizzly scoring in the 64th minute.
Napavine scored late in the half on a penalty kick to make the final score.
“Ball movement was well done throughout the game,” Hoquiam coach Drew Grannemann said. “They moved the ball to the outside and we were lucky enough to finish a few of those deep crosses. All around, the movement was superb. Hopefully this is the tone of the rest of the season. The girls really stepped up when it mattered.”
Grannemann cited goalie Jade Cox for a strong performance and centerback Jordan Cox for a solid effort directing the midfielders.
Hoquiam hosts Adna on Thursday.
Wildcats 12, Eagles 0
WESTPORT — Kjirstin Hopfer scored four goals as Ocosta walloped Evergreen Lutheran in a non-league opener Tuesday at Westport.
Hopfer tallied the first three goals as the Wildcats rolled to an 8-0 halftime lead.
Kennedy Merino scored twice and Piper Furford, Anna Samuelson, Teal Mitby, Abriana Ness and sisters Mercedes and Katelynn Denny once each for the Wildcats.
“We were hoping for a stronger team to play against,” Ocosta coach Mike King acknowledged. “We worked on passing and completed 70 percent of our passes, which is incredible for us.”
The same two teams square off again Thursday in Puyallup.
Thunderbirds 3, Bulldogs 1
TUMWATER — Montesano was tested from start to finish as Tumwater defeated the Bulldogs in a non-league match at Tumwater on Tuesday.
The 2A Thunderbirds added marks in the 30th and 35th minutes to take a 2-0 lead into halftime and tacked on one more goal early in the second half.
Montesano’s lone goal came from Peyton Poler in the 78th minute. The junior stole the ball and fired a shot on net from just outside the box.
“We learned a lot about all the players tonight after the big turnover from last year,” Monte coach Mike Malpass said. “We have a lot of fresh faces coming in and we were happy with their performance.”
Malpass cited Poler and goalkeeper Haylee Perkinson for solid efforts throughout the match.
Tumwater won the JV match, 3-1.
Montesano (0-1) hosts Aberdeen on Thursday.
BOYS GOLF
Grizzlies 168, Knights 189
VANCOUVER — Hoquiam’s first road match of the season netted a big Southwest Washington 1A League victory over a possible district rival on Tuesday night at the Green Meadows Golf Course.
The Grizzlies’ John Sand earned medalist honors with an even-par 36, while Josh Burgher carded a 40 to help the cause.
“Given the fact we were on the road, to be in the (160s), that is really good,” HHS head coach Larry Dublanko said. “It shows our depth that we showed at the jamboree. The guys are really happy with how they played.”
On Tuesday, Hoquiam will stay home at Highland Golf Course to take on rival Aberdeen for the only time this season.
